First with his mentor, Morse. And now with his very own whipping boy sergeant, Hathaway.
This is so great. The first time Morse and Lewis have a real scene together (rather than Lewis just being another officer hanging around the crime scene), and how does this partnership begin? With Lewis wiping a smudge of dirt off Morse's face.
I can only assume that he is in constant "Daddy Mode" and this is simply the Pavlovian reaction to smudgy faces.
Male-bonding 1980's Britain style!
Actually, this scene from "Twilight of the Gods" (which is one of my fave episodes. Lots of good Morse n' Lewis stuff. Also the one with the scene of Lewis being hit on by that queen) really nut-shells the two of them and their different world views, but how it's a friendly and accepted difference. Morse is talking about a really good operatic performance he saw...
And despite those differences they will be there for each other, to patch each other up, like all goods partners do.
And so brilliant together that it absolutely breaks your heart when they do fight, which occurred a little more often near the end of the series, as Lewis should have been Inspector by then and he's a bit miffed about that, and gets more miff when it seems Morse still doesn't think he's ready. The ouchiest is in "The Way Through the Woods." They have a row, but then Lewis goes off on his own, but then Morse realizes that Lewis could be in Peril. And Lewis is in Peril! And even though I knew full well he was going to be Okay, I panicked right along with Morse when he saw the blood. And and....Lewis-In-Peril is NOT OKAY! Okay? Even if it does give us this kind of hawtness
But anyway. Morse saves Lewis, and everything is fine between them again. Look! He actually gives a gesture of affection!
And of course, most heartbreaking of all is
SPOILER FOR END OF SERIES. *whimper cry*
But that was 2000. Jump ahead to 2006.
And if you thought Lewis was dorky, get a load of Hathaway's extra-curricular interest:
"I play music... It's World music with a combination of Jazz and Medieval Madrigals."
But it's okay, Lewis understands....sorta. In my favourite B-plot for an episode: Lewis helps Hathaway get his stolen guitar back on the side while working on a murder case.
♥♥♥
And since it's the 21st century, a lot more comments are made concerning how...coupley partnerships like this are. Usually it's Hathaway making them...
There is that one time a headmaster thought they were a couple come to get their child into the school. To which Hathaway grabs Lewis's hand
and says, "Darling, I think you should explain."
But that's not all....
A person of interest to Hathaway, re: Lewis.
"Is this your date for the evening?"
"Oh yeah, we're inseparable. Come on sir, let's go and tuck you into your tux."
A personal conversation started by Lewis,
"How long have you fancied Fiona McKendrick?"
"Call a spade a shovel, why don't you?"
"Wha- You two...?"
"Yeah. For a while. We even tried to work out how on earth I was going to break-up with you, sir."
The Dr Hobson gets a little put-off by Lewis
"How do you stand him when he's like this?"
"Suffering and endurance, doctor, the bedrock of a happy marriage."
And I know there's more, but these were the ones I could remember right-off.
Now, I have decided that it is within the realm of possibility that Hathaway could in fact have a big crush on Lewis. Especially after "Life Born of Fire" where Lewis and Hathaway have Dramatic Massive Row, and then the episode's climax involves Lewis saving Hathaway's life by carrying him heroically from a burning building!
Big Damn Hero moment! \0/
Alas, for all their trying to make me ship them, at the end of the day I'm going for the Lewis/Dr. Hobson 'ship. And happily, in series 4 (or the upcoming series 3 for the U.S. (and even though I told myself I could wait until August for the next series, I didn't. But I'll still rewatch it anyways for I can in HD)) it looks like it's becoming a bit more canon! *excited squee* But here's a cap from pre-bit-more-canon.
So hopefullly actual canon by or sometime in series 5? I understand they're going to start fiiiilming.
So there you have it. My Big Three Reasons why I love Sgt./Insp. Robert "Robbie" Lewis.
So now that that's over. You all can go...you know....
