Between classes this morning I took the oppurtunity to pen a letter to Moolzy, which I still intend to send to her at film camp in Maine, but I decided that the contents of the letter really pertain to all of my friends, so I'm posting most of it online.
Dear Moolzy (and gaggle of lj readers),
I am officially sitting in on my first class of "World History Since 1500". Fascinating, huh?
So far, a lot more of the people in my classes are older than I imagined they would be. A lot of them are juniors and seniors in college taking a last course for some program or another, and a few are returning to school. One woman in my philo class is in her mid forties and shared with us that two years ago, after a drawn out and nasty divorce, she decided to change her life by returnig to college, so she did. The same woman studies Kabballah. Of course. Another man in philo with me is a Hassidic former officer of the Israeli Army who was sponsored by a local rabbi to study here for his philosohpy doctorate. I have no idea why he's in introductory courses, but whatev. He offered to take me to a conservative service sometime if I get homesick, no temples are anywhere near in biking distance. Maybe I will go, he seems very not-sckethcy. Tsit-Tsit and everything.
My classes have been pretty interesting thus far. One may even become riveting, we shall see. I'm certainly not grateful to my parents for dragging me here, but I am definitly becoming more optimistic about the situation.
It seems I have succesfully forced at least six ind individuals to be my friends. That is, we eat most meals together, sit together during hall meetings, and I think tomorrow we're going on a rock climbing expidition at the rec center that I organized.
I've also joined our form of student government, and I will soon be co-coordinating the Junior Scholars dance. Go figure, right? As lame as I find student government to be, I think I'll meet a bunch of people.
Back to the friends. First is Elaine, my suit-mate who lives right next door. She's Asian and likes men in their mid twenties, no younger. She and I went running this morning before breakfast. She wakes up at five in the morning and goes to sleep around eight. She plays the violin and the piano. Amanda, the funny wasp, is the product of three older brothers. She has reddish hair and brought a bag of sports equipment I hope never leaves her room. Dear god, I can't possibly forget Adam, the gay, non-practicing Jew who hates it when he's accuratly compared to Corey Matthews from Boy Meets World.
Then there's Dennis, who was in my room until two in the morning discussing his theories on organzied religion, lack thereof, and human nature in general. He's from Southern, OH, here on scholarship. Basically, he's the most brilliant diamon in the rough I have ever met. He's applying to a bunch of Ivy League schools and we discussed what it's like for him to go to a public high school in Portsmouth, OH. My roomate is also from Portsmouth. She's very nice and responsible and keeps us on task about homework and getting places on time. So far I'm really glad we've been paired up.
I have officially perfected living. I wake up at nine, get to breakfast, go to class, then another class, and eat lunch at three thirty. Then I come back to the dorm, read and/or take a nap, shower, head off to dinner, come back to do my homework, and chillax with the dorm crew until one or two in the morning.
And now, I'm off to read about modern philosophical arguments.

Let's use it, shall we?
