Material Girl

Much like my dear friend Kirsten, I have become fed-up with my cluttered lifestyle. I have too many clothes to fit in my dresser at home, and my closet is also completely full up. My walls are covered in random trinkets that have no reason to be there at all, except that they were given to me by well-meaning relatives; they're pretty much there becuase I feel obligated to keep them. Picture frames, silly little glass figurines, etc., cover up every conceivable surface of my room. And when I walk in, I always trip on something. It's time for a change.

My goal is to be able to fit every item of clothing I own into one standard-sized dresser. That pretty much means cutting down my clothing by half. I also intend to have squeaky clean surfaces--no meaningless shit to get in the way. I will keep the trinkets that I deem worthy of keeping, but everything else must go. That's right, folks: it's cleaning time.

I made considerable progress toward this end over the weekend when I donated about a quarter of my wardrobe to Goodwill. I also eliminated an entire Rubbermaid bucketfull of gadgets I no longer care for. It was a bit difficult, especially with my mom standing over my shoulder, trying to convince me to keep everything: "But, isn't that plastic, fake Asian fan from Dollar General special? And what about this Happy Meal toy?" Sure, maybe these things were special at one time, but it is extremely liberating to put them away.

Today I plan to go through all my clothes at school, and hopefully give away that other quarter. I only wear, like, four shirts anyway. The rest just kind of sits there, taking up space.
