The Annual Pilgrimage to Tennessee (12/24)

Dec 26, 2015 10:05

I'm currently curled up in a corner with my laptop, with my parents convinced that I'm sitting here doing work for Part-Time Job so that they'll leave me alone for a bit. Things haven't been too bad so far (save for a few "seriously, stop talking" moments where the casual racism or politics talk got be a bit too much). I'll see if I can at least get through Christmas Eve, though, before they drag me away.

So... as I said in my last post, there were some pretty bad storms the night that I got into Tennessee, and I didn't sleep all that well because of them. I'm used to living in a second floor apartment, with apartments above and below me, so I never hear rain. That's very much not the case in my parents' house. Add in the lightning and thunder loud enough to shake the house, and it wasn't that surprising that I woke up around 6am on Thursday.

I dragged myself out of bed and frantically finished up a Yuletide treat before my parents got up. Then I put on clothes and headed into town, because one of my former coworkers from the Restaurant of Doom had asked me to stop by for breakfast. It was nice, I suppose? The restaurant was packed, since it's one of the only places in town that actually serves breakfast, but I took advantage of the all-you-can-eat buffet and had a nice talk with several people that I used to work with.

Afterwards, I ran a few errands for my mom (picking up a prescription at the pharmacy, etc.) before making the 20(ish) minute drive back out of town. I frantically finished up another Yuletide treat before having to set aside the rest of them (which will hopefully be posted a NYR stories) in order to help start cooking.

By the time everything was either in the oven or back in fridge to wait to be cooked the next morning, it was something like 1pm. The parents and I got dressed, packed the car, and then headed down to my aunt and uncle's house for Christmas Eve with mom's side of the family.

It went about the same as usual? We played some games, ate a lot of food, and then exchanged gifts. (The "kids" got actual presents from everyone, and I use that term loosely considering the youngest of us is a few months shy of turning 24, plus we did a Dirty Santa exchange that everyone participated in.) Then it was time for more games.

We headed out somewhere around 9:30pm, which put us back at my parents' house between 10:15-10:30pm. I immediately snagged the shower while my parents were busy, since they only have one bathroom in the house and it's pretty much first come, first served. Then I hid myself in a dark corner to read my Yuletide fics and try to catch up on a few online things.

It took a little while to get through them all, considering I had four Yuletide fics to read, but it was a nice way to end the day. And then I crashed a little after midnight.
