Summary: Unexpected romance found in a cup of coffee and sliced cake.

---

Along the busy streets of Apgujeong, there was the sweet small cafe that I had been working in part-time was located. I loved being a waitress. I lived serving drinks to the regulars, introducing the best of our menu to the newcomers and just the fact of being surrounded by cakes, teas, sandwiches and coffee with a couple of stories from our customer and a few laughs, it was the perfect recipe for my every day.

It was not obligatory for us to sit with our customers and become their host or hostess but if they request for our company and we we were willing to do it then we do it!

Our cafe was one happy place. Well that was until a particular customer came in.

Like any other new customer, he looked around the cafe as he entered. He was quite tall so he bent over to look at the cakes in the display shelf. Then he walked to the counter, I was attending that day, and he looked up at our drink selection.

he's reallly tall - ridiculously tall. he's white and with sun-kissed hair and eyes that shine pleasantly.

he's reallly tall - ridiculously tall. he's white and with sun-kissed hair and eyes that shine pleasantly.

He was tall - ridiculously tall actually. White skin and sun-kissed hair and pleasant eyes that shine... Okay swooning off. He was seriously attractive. End of discussion.

Seeing as he was new, I greeted him.

“Good afternoon sir welcome to Sunkist Café. May I suggest our bestseller our mocha cafe latte, or perhaps you'd like to try our hot brewed strawberry coffee”

He was just looking up at the menu like he didn't hear the babbling that I was doing.

“Coffee.. Black”

He just stared at the menu then looked at me after about a millisecond of eye contact then he looked for his wallet in his bag.

“May I suggest a cake to go with that sir?”

“No, just the coffee”

He paid for the coffee and he chose a seat near the bookshelf by the window. It was the same spot that I like about the shop. It was as if you were in the comfort of your own study, looking out that window just sends you to your own world.

The tall guy who would always sit by the window and drink black coffee, he sat there and would look outside thinking deeply as he sipped on that cup.

After almost a month since that tall lanky guy’s first visit, I had come to realize these things:

1. He always comes in depressed. He would always have that same blank expression from when he first arrived. And he would always order that same black coffee and nothing more.

2. He has increased our female customers by 95%.

...And cake sales by 50%

...And service charges 50%

But unfortunately for his female admirers he would politely decline all the cakes that were coming in for him with a melancholic smile. He would apologize to the waiter or waitress whom his admirers paid just to give him the cake slice. Because, yeah, not a single girl in her right mind would walk up to a guy personally and give him a cake right? And then he’d turn to the person who sent the cake and give her an apologetic smile and a courtesy nod.

Then he would continue minding his own business, sipping on his black coffee and staring out the window.

I eventually learned that his name was Zhoumi. Yes, I heard his fan girls whisper while ordering at the counter.

I was unaware of my growing fondness for Zhoumi. Because I finally grew out of my hatred for him for always buying black coffee on my sweet haven and replaced it with the idea that, he did treat Sunkist café as his haven but unlike the other customers, instead of seeking the company of sweets and friends, he preferred silence, some magazines and the company of his warm black coffee.

I made it a point that with little friendly gestures, I would try to make this man come out of this café wearing even the smallest smile on his face.

And with that mission in mind, I was determined to make Zhoumi happy. I always prepared his orders so I always used bright colored mugs for his coffee and add a small pastry on the side.

The first time I did that, I was quite nervous when I served him the coffee and the pastry. I saw a small smile crept up his lips at the sight of the bright yellow cup of coffee. And as for the pastry...

“Oh, compliments from the chef!”

He fell for it.

After that he visited the café more often making his admirers happier. Even if he wasn’t in a bad mood, he would visit the café. I was surprised when he greeted me for the first time. I was manning the cash register once again.

“Good afternoon sir welcome to Sunkist café. What can I get you?”

“Hi” then he smiled the brightest smile that I hadn’t seen in my entire life. “One mocha latte, decaf”

I immediately snapped out of my trance. Seriously I was seeing rainbows when I saw his smile.

“U…gghm..would you like a cake with that, sir?”

“Nothing too sweet, any recommendations?”

“How about a slice of carrot cake?”

“Hmm.. Okay”

As usual he reached for his wallet inside his bag, paid the bill and sat on his favorite spot. The fangirls had always reserved that spot for him. Since they were paying, management agreed.

As I prepared his order, I didn’t notice that I, too, was smiling. Jisoon, my co-worker teased me that I secretly have the “hots” for Zhoumi. Naturally a girl would lie. But then again, it was true that he was extremely attractive but professionally speaking you couldn't flirt with customers.

Yes, although the feeling was a little confusing, when I stood there looking at the man sitting by the window near the bookshelf, I think I was falling for him.

“Oh, thanks,” he said as I placed his cake and coffee on the table.

“Could I get you anything else, sir?”

“Hmm…could you pick out your favorite coffee and cake? I think I am a little hungry today”, he gave me that handsome smile once again.

I couldn’t help but blush because he was just gorgeous. But I had to get back to work.

“Will a strawberry shortcake and black coffee be okay with you, sir?”

Out of the blue.. me asking for black coffee? This was crazy!

“Ironic..but seriously, you want to pair a sweet cake with a bitter coffee?”

“I’ll get a mocha latte then.”

I was about to leave when suddenly…

“Oh and miss, after bringing my cake and coffee, could you join me for coffee?”

And that was a start for one beautiful relationship.
