I overheard a conversation between an engaged couple on the Metro yesterday that reminded me of my aunt, and made me think of my recent ex.

Ugh, I am so torn on all this. I get that it is supposed to represent a promise. But, so many young women seem to put the ring above the commitment, and it's not. It's a piece of jewelry. The promise from a man to respect you, love you, and value you as his partner can't be bought.

We're all a product of our consumer society. Some of us rebel against it, some of us embrace it. :)

I expounded probably too long to normalcyispasse above you about what it means to me ( ... )

I think we agree on several points, and the concept that the actual choice to marry a person is the vital part of the equation. And I am not implying that I disapprove of rings in general-- I like the symbolism of the commitment we make to another person. I think, in the end, our views are pretty close-- something to the effect of "make sure you wear IT, not IT wears you."

being in healthcare pretty much decided my ring for me...a plain platinum band. Stones are carriers of bacteria, and I don't like taking my ring off for work(just asking for it to get lost, and I like to appear married at work). But, I hate diamonds and am not so big on stones in general, so not a big deal.

Hm, you know, I've never thought of stones as carriers of bacteria. I have thought given a lot of thought to taking my ring off for work, that, in my profession, is a given.

One of the stylists wears a particular necklace when she works and keeps her engagement ring on it. That's about what I've been planning to do. The chain is not so long to interfere but long enough that she can see that the ring is there.

The loveliest thing about rings is that what they mean and how they look are as unique as the people who wear them. :)

yeah, wearing a ring on a chain isn't an option in healthcare either...crazy patients will grab at them, and they can(supposedly) be a conductor of electricity from defib paddles.

Many hospitals have specific policies about rings...some even outright banning faceted stones due to the bacteria.

My ring is a sapphire. I love it. I was complimented on it just the other day.

We chose sapphire for several different reasons The most important reason is that I have huge hands. With our budget, we could have gotten a tiny diamond or a large sapphire. I felt like I needed a sizeable stone to balance out my fingers.
