Happy Birthday, Harry

Harry sat in his hotel suite in a foul mood. He'd been sent on this assignment three weeks ago, assured that it would take a week - two at most. Yet here he sat, alone, on his twenty-first birthday.

Over the past few months, Harry had allowed himself to imagine a not-quite-so-solitary life. It was stupid, he was sure, but it didn't stop him from hoping.

He remembered a day, four months ago, like it was yesterday. He'd been told he'd have to team up with a potions specialist for a case he'd been working on. What he hadn't been told was who the potions expert was. Kingsley knew better than to warn Harry that he'd be working with Draco Malfoy.

Harry would have refused, but once he arrived on scene, he couldn't back out without appearing unprofessional. He laughed as he remembered Malfoy's face when he'd seen Harry. He'd obviously not been warned either.

Over the duration of the case - six weeks in total - they'd developed first a reluctant professional rapport, then what could only be characterised as a friendship.

After the case wrapped up - successfully and relatively quickly, thanks to Draco's help - Harry found himself inviting the other man to join him for dinner or a drink at the pub. Nothing had happened between them, but Harry was almost sure, sometimes, that he felt a mutual attraction building between them. He had hoped to spend his birthday, or at least a part of it, with Draco.

But now he was stuck in the middle of the country on a stupid case. There was no Floo access this far out and Apparition wasn't recommended, for some technical reason Harry didn't even try to understand. Honestly, what was the good of being a wizard sometimes? Harry still didn't like Apparition much, so he wasn't going to chance losing a vital part of his anatomy by challenging whatever-the-heck reason they gave him. Unfortunately, by the time he'd known he was stuck here, and he'd put in a request for a portkey, it was too late for the slow wheels of the Ministry to get him one in time. So here he was.

A knock at the door shook him out of his thoughts. Not in the mood to eat alone in a crowded restaurant, he'd ordered some room service. He opened the door, and …

"Draco?"

"I believe you ordered room service?"

"I did." Had I known you were on the menu, I'd have ordered it the day I arrived. "But … what are you doing here?"

"Is that how you greet all your guests, Potter?"

"Er … sorry. Come in."

Draco smiled and wheeled the room service cart in ahead of him.

"So what are you doing here?"

"Do correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's your birthday today."

"Yes … it is."

"Well, I'd heard that you weren't going to be making it home for the occasion, so I decided to bring the party to you."

Oh. A party. Harry tried to hide his disappointment. Not that he didn't love his friends, but he'd hoped … when he saw Draco at the door … well.

"Harry?"

"Hmm?"

"Is something wrong?"

"No. Everything is wonderful. Thanks." Harry looked towards the door. "So, where's everyone else?"

Draco's face turned pink. "Well … I hope you don't mind, but I sort of planned on a party of two." He looked down at his feet.

"Really?" Harry asked.

Draco nodded and looked up. Harry smiled. Draco relaxed. They stood looking at each other for what seemed an age.

"Oh, hell," Draco said, then he stepped forward, grabbed Harry behind the neck, and kissed him firmly on the lips.

When Draco stepped back, Harry grinned at him. "I think a party for two is a brilliant idea."
