dracoharry100 prompt of "amazement".

"I used to believe in forever . . . but forever was too good to be true." His words barely out of his mouth, Draco turned to leave the room.
"Wait! Don't leave!"
"It's over, Hermione." His back was still facing her. "Accept it. I have."
"But you can't!"
Amazed at her conviction, he turned to face her, a lone tear streaming down his face. "Hermione, he doesn't want me. It's over. I'm not happy about it, but I can't just cling to false hope. I can't ... I won't do that to myself."
"But he loves you."
"Not anymore."
"The hardest part is what to leave behind ... it's time to let go!"
Ron wasn't sure whom Harry was trying to convince with those words, but they didn't ring true to him. Amazed at what he was about to do, he strode across the room to face his friend.
"You're an idiot, you know that? A first class prat."
"What?"
"I said you're a prat. Malfoy - Merlin's balls, I can't believe I'm saying this - is the best thing that ever happened to you. And you're about to throw that away. For what? Because of his stupid father?"
Hermione sat staring, shocked and amazed at her boyfriend. She had always loved him, but this ... this was something that elevated her respect for him immeasurably.
It had been he who had told her to go find Draco and stop him leaving.
He who announced how stupid Harry was being, and that he was going to stop him making the worst mistake of his life, if it killed him.
And he who had convinced Harry to be there.
They watched as Harry took Draco in his arms, and gave support to the man he loved as his father lay dying.
"I'm so sorry, Draco. I was insensitive and uncaring and ... I was an idiot."
Amazed, Draco didn't argue, but remained in Harry's arms.
"I know he's your father. I know that you love him. It's just ... well, I suppose that after everything we'd been through, after he disowned you and wouldn't speak to you because of me, I just felt like you were choosing him over me."
"Harry, I made that decision long ago. I chose you. I never went back on that."
"I know. I'll never doubt you again. Now go. You need to make your peace."
