Of all the things about a movie to bother me

Look, the decision to put the female lead in four inch heels for the entire film in Jurassic World puzzles me too. She doesn't have time to go back to her office and grab flats, but there's no reason she couldn't have a purse with a spare pare of ballet flats, have sneakers or flats in her jeep, or just start her off with a flat or a more reasonable heel to begin with. It's not uncommon to carry a spare pare of shoes along if you're planning to spend a lot of time in heels - Dr. Scholl's even markets Fast Flats for exactly this reason. I can even understand not just taking them off because if you're used to heels, and they're well balanced enough some people can actually walk quite quickly in them, even run. Also, the actress is something like 5'8, so it's not like they needed to give her a boost to avoid using a Scully box or whatever. But it's not like my expectations of sense are high anyway in a Hollywood summer blockbuster.

No, what bothers me are the reviews going 'why doesn't she just break off the heels?' Well aside from the fact that it's harder than it looks, especially on shoes as expensive as those look, if you break the heel off a high-heeled shoe, you don't wind up with a flat shoe. You'd wind up trying to stand on your heels with your toes bending back toward your leg, and probably falling on your ass. You're sure as hell not running anywhere in them. Standing in a heel isn't the same as standing on your toes; the shoe is not flexible in the middle and you still have some support for your arch and heel.

I have no idea how she managed over soft jungle ground, though. Balanced or not, used to them or not, if the ground has enough give stilettos will just sink into it. (Right, shoes I wore at my dad's second wedding? It was in the middle of a drought and I kept getting yanked off balance because every third step or so my heel would just punch through the ground.) I also don't know why she didn't just take the shoes off. I know you can pick up some nasty stuff from walking barefoot, but at least while infection's setting in you can still run and there'll be time to get treatment once you're, you know, not eaten.

But breaking off the heels still doesn't solve a damn thing.
