The super stopped by this morning to confirm some of the details he'd heard second-hand from us via Neighbour. Apparently there was some confusion as to whether I know the tenants in question on sight, and had seen someone knocking on or trying doors. I don't, and I haven't. All I can verify is the unit the noise is coming from, it being right on top of me, and the fact that we have heard people knocking on and trying doors. I guess there have been complaints made to Super about the noise, but on occasion we've slept through it! Super tells us that it is not the tenant signed to the lease who is making the noise, but that the problem occurs when certain of his friends and family members come to visit. Super also confirmed that I should call the office on Monday RE: Thursday night. I really, really don't want to turn into That Tenant - you know, the one who thinks that just because they've lived somewhere a certain period of time the whole building is essentially their house, and should be run their way. But I don't want to be woken up at three o'clock in the morning by bellowing fools, or prevented from using my television, stereo, computer, or even earphones by an excessively loud stereo at any time of the day. That there's someone knocking on doors and trying knobs on the same nights there is noise from that unit doesn't make me very happy, either. That twice now I have heard thumping, banging, and swearing in the middle of the night from this unit makes me very uncomfortable. Thursday night I was actually on my way out of bed to call the cops because I thought a fight was breaking out up there! Someone left and the fight ended before I did, though.
I have nothing against the tenant upstairs, and I don't want to see him - or anyone! - evicted, or have a record of problems as a tenant. I know he's not entirely the problem, it's mostly his guests. BUT, that being said, if he knows that the people he brings home with him in the middle of the night are causing disturbances for the other people in the building, he has a responsibility to keep things under control. I hope that he only has to get one warning from the landlord, one piece of paper to show to his buddies and say "Look, assholes, you're gonna get me kicked out if you don't shut up!" and that'll fix it.
Or, maybe, encourage him to get better friends.
I went to the vision clinic today to get me peepers checked out. There's this nifty scan thingy they do called an OptoMap. It takes a photo of the back of your retina, so they can check on the health of your optic nerves, the veins in your eyes, and look at any potential anomalies in the retina. It's quite neat, and the finished photo looks a lot like a nebula. It also shows that I have, of all things, a freckle on my retina. They want me to come back for another appointment, preferably at night due to drops they'd have to give me making my eyes sensitive to light, so they can check and make sure it's flat and not "bumped up". But it's "probably nothing." I love the way they say that.
I did need glasses, due more to the way my eyes are shaped than any real loss of vision. I think I have lost a very little bit of my ability to see at a distance, but since the doctor didn't mention anything specific, it's probably no more than is normal as you head towards thirty. (I have to keep reminding myself that that's what I'm doing; in my head, I'm twenty-three, twenty-four, max.) I picked out blue metallic frames. Is anyone surprised? ;) They'll be ready next week.
SoundEffect is demanding his computer back. (I was too lazy to turn mine on.) And yet, he resists the urge to read over my shoulder. What a sweetie. :P
