Too much experience?

I think this was really code for
(1) You cost too much, and
(2) You're going to be bored, which means you'll leave.

**sigh**

Earlier this week, I'd applied for a Mktg Coord position with an economic consultancy. (I'd heard of them. They were a minor competitor of the place I'd worked as an economic analyst.) How neat!, thought I. Get in touch with my econ roots while getting to do the job function that excites me. Awesome.

I got a phone call this morning from their office. No message.

A good communications professional, I called back anyway and let the receptionist figure out whom I needed to talk to. Left a message.

I just got a call back (from a different person). Basically, the hiring manager had thought it was neat that I'd worked for a competitor, loved my econ and communications backgrounds, and had called. She hadn't left a message, however, because at the last second she looked at my salary history.

This opened up the question, "what salary range are you looking at?" Since it turned out that the very upper end of their salary range meshes with the very lower end of mine, I asked to be told a bit more about the position. Sure, it's a terribly boring admin job for the first year, but the hire is expected to stay for 2-3 years and someday grow into the woman who talked to me on the phone.

I think this was really a case of "you're clearly too ambitious". That or I really do cost too much and that upper end figure was never supposed to see light of day. Either way, I got told for the first time ever, "You have too much experience."

Too much experience? That's a new one on me.

Argh! Well, it must not have been the right job.
