Really, the entire relationship is rooted in irony: Barry devotes himself to fighting crime, and yet here he is doing such wonderful, forbidden things. He isn’t one to miss the chance to point it out, either.
“Ironic, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. Us. Crimefighters. Doing this.”
And of course Wally understands it. Wally, barely sixteen, understands. He shouldn’t have to, not yet. He knows so many things that he shouldn’t. Like the feel of dirty fingernails digging into his hips, the warmth of his uncle’s breath against his neck, the damp of sweat mixing with fluid and the taste of illegality.
Barry has grown to love irony.
