More gardening this weekend. The back yard is really becoming comfortable and the plants are starting to thrive. On impulse, I "splurged" on some cheap border brick to create the arbor hedge bed. On one side, we have an aging wooden fence, part of which fell down in a storm this Winter-Spring. Using pieces-parts, I cobbled together a fix that should last a year or two until we can replace it completely. On the other side, we have a chain-link fence that makes us feel like we're in our neighbor's back yard. I created a bed so we can plant arbor vitae (or similar narrow shrub) just a little further apart than usual so that we can still talk to our neighbors over the fence, but still be able to sit down in semi-privacy. My initial idea was medium-growth/medium-height arbor vitae (city ordinance limits the height to 6') planted 6' apart (instead of 4' hedge width) with hosta in between. Now I'm thinking about ornamental grasses, and maybe some other shrubby bits... Not sure if I'll take the less expensive route now or wait until we've saved money for a "better" series of plants...
