the internet doesn’t have correct typography by default, at least when you type in livejournal that is.

for example: "I love popcorn" <---the quotation marks are your regular layman's quotation marks, ugly as sin.

should be: “I love popcorn”

or what I hate seeing most, ugly apostrophes.

I'm tired. <---ugly apostrophes

I’m tired. <---much ( Read more... )

annoyed, sleepy, popcorn

Yeah, there's a reason for that, actually. I'm working as a programmer right now and those characters that you like are called high ASCII characters. Put those characters into a database and they'll frequently come out garbled with ?'s being the result, which is way worse than a straight set of apostrophes or quotation marks.

Well what you’re saying makes sense as a programmer. Just lately been noticing it, and as a designer, it seems irksome that a solution hasn’t been made for it to just be an automatic translation, or to sound less technical, that it just is the default quotation marks.

Strange that they would effect a database like that though.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they affect databases like that. It's definitely something database related because I've noticed that on the rare occasion that text is pasted straight into the HTML, it doesn't happen.
