Why this must be read/seen: One, it's a Sally fic (a rarity in itself) and two, it's done cleverly, without a word wasted. Sandoz delivers just plain good writing here, explaining Sally's choice of stage name within a tightly constructed moment all while flickering forward in future-snapshots to Laurie's life and the ironies (and similarities) in both women's lives (and done in 600 words, no less). With a wonderful grasp on Sally's voice and the mores of the time, You Gotta Get a Gimmick gives us sassy, self-deprecating, and smart without having to rely on cheesy gimmicks of its own.

Rita Hayworth, born Margarita Carmen Casino. At the Stage Left nightclub Myrtle Goldstein changed it to Myrna Gold, “because that’s what I am baby, pure gold.”

Sally sat on the chaise lounge, legs crossed, exposing one creamy thigh and flipping through one of the pulp magazines Larry left sprinkled around the room like his dirty socks. She liked adventure stories, though she thumbed the pages without reading a single word, because really, men from Mars? Who could stand this space stuff?
