Here’s To You
The last time he’d been here, it had been night, and the town had been alive. Now, in the mid-afternoon sun, it seemed as if the heart had gone out of the place.
Will Turner paused by the door to the Faithful Bride, wondering if it would be considered proper etiquette to hoist a tankard in memory of Jack. Of course it would, he decided, stepping through the door into the unsettlingly quiet tavern. He sat down, and waved one of the barmaids over, she came, with an uncharacteristic heaviness in her step.
“An ale,” Will murmured, and the maid nodded.
When she brought it, and set it down with a thud, the tavern quieted further as if waiting for him to do something.
“To Jack,” Will said firmly, raising his mug to his lips. A low rumbling of response, and all around him, Will heard the patrons repeat his statement.
