During a phone call to one of the many repairmen lately, I was asked for my name. They got my last name ok, but she kept asking me to respell my first name. I'm like - it's LAUREN. She asked me to repeat it a few times. L-A-U-R-E-N. She said - how do you say it? I say "LAURen" (kinda sounds like CAR-in). She says "OOOH! Lauren!" (like "foreign". She asked me where I was raised and I told her St. Louis (that's where my parents were from anyway). That apparently explained it for her.
In my opinion the way I say my name (with an "are" sound as opposed to a "or" sound) is much prettier, and reflects how it is spelled. "Loren" is a guy's name. Is it wrong for me to be picky about this?... the husband even disagrees with me. What are your thoughts?...
P.S. What is even more annoying is when my students (who I frequently communicate with by e-mail) call me Laura. I'm like - can't you read that signature at the bottom of the e-mail?
