When I spotted this on the website my first reaction was "oh god no, not another attempt by Production IG and Gainax to stick their preverbial penis in my ear and scramble my brains another time!" But I was PLEASANTLY surprised ^_^
Eva: Rebuild is the latest addition to Gainax & Production IG's money making machine, and will consist of 4 feature length episodes (or movies as they are being dubbed as).
Think of Rebuild as the bastard child of Death and Rebirth & Akira. Like D&R, Rebuild is a recap of the original series, but with the following pros: Redrawn, reanimated, added CG scenes, added story scenes, its darker, theres a LOT of blood and less of the standing about watching the scenery pass by. But thats not all, the 4th and final movie is to be yet another ending to evangelion, one that maybe all eva fans around the world will rejoice at instead of the preverbial mindfucks that came before.
So whats the downside to it? The downside is once again sitting through the telling of the story, as if its not been drummed into us enough already, although for people like myself who havent watched eva in AGES, it was a good excuse to dust off the old DVDs (or VHSs if youre like me) and bring in a comparison.
Nearly everything in this movie has been redrawn, down to the details on the NERV helicopter fighters AND the logo for SEELE. Although my personal favourite rework (and actually my favourite episode & angel from the orginal series) has got to be the 5th Angel, Ramiel.
Ramiel was a giant floating diamond which tried to drill its way down to Central Dogma, vapourising anything within its range with a powerful particle cannon. Now, Ramiel is completely in CG, and the production team mustve had great fun in designing and animating its many defensive and offensive forms as it changes its shape to reveal its core during attacks.
YES its awesome and YES I'm buying the DVDs, the special DVDs, the Directors Cut and probably the Box Set aswell but its worth it to watch Evangelion in what I'd describe as... The way it SHOULD have been.
PROTIP: If you haven't seen Evangelion yet then you're probably best watching the original series and first 2 movies BEFORE picking up Rebuild. Rebuild has a far more linear story telling method and does miss out some interaction scenes. Quite so considering that the fist 6 episodes (3 hours) has been condenced into an hour and a half.
