Reason Four: Quiet Nights

Junhyung and Hyunseung haven’t talked for a day.

Junhyung honestly doesn’t know why. He doesn’t know why he’s locked himself in his room, refusing to answer to any of the knocks at the door. He doesn’t know why he’s not picking up his cell phone when the ringtone echoes throughout the room. He doesn’t know why he hasn’t eaten at all today.

Or maybe he does know why.

He knows it has to do with Hyunseung. He knows Hyunseung can mess him up in all kinds of ways, one being the state he’s in now.

He knows that the kiss last night was…well, indescribable. He can’t explain it. He knows he’s happy but…

He’s decided to take the day off from everything and think, as much as he doesn’t want to.

There’s that knock again.

“Junhyung? Junhyung, please open the door.”

Silence.

“…I want to talk, Junhyung. Just please…”

Junhyung didn’t budge from his position on the bed. He stared at his ceiling, daring Hyunseung to speak again.

“…”

He heard footsteps that got quieter with each step. He let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in and closed his eyes.

He must’ve fallen asleep, because the noise that woke him was the beeping and vibrating of his phone in his bed. His eyes snapped open, and he blinked a few times. He glanced out the window before picking his phone up. It had already gotten dark, he noted.

He looked at the lights flashing, “One new message” and opened it up. It was from an unknown number, and Junhyung’s jaw dropped when he read it.

It’s Hyunseung.

Since you’re immature enough to avoid me all day, I’ve decided I’m going. I don’t want to be around people who don’t want to be around me. I thought maybe this house would be different. I thought maybe the foreign exchange program was going to be good for me, and with luck I’d meet someone who’s fun and caring and everything else I could imagine.

And that happened, so why do I feel like crying?

I told your dad I was going out to the convenience store, but I won’t be coming back. I thought I’d write you this to say goodbye.

And don’t tell me I’m being overdramatic, because that’s just me.

Take care.

P.S. I’m so sorry about the kiss.

Junhyung couldn’t do anything but stare. He re-read it God knows how many times, and then finally something triggered in his brain. Hyunseung is leaving. It finally sunk in.

Junhyung darted out of his room.

“You idiot,” Junhyung mumbled under his breath as he ran down the sidewalk.

He looked around, frantically searching for Hyunseung. He wasn’t going to let him leave, no way. He wouldn’t be able to go anywhere anyway. Junhyung sighed at how overdramatic Hyunseung was.

But maybe that’s something he liked about him.

He sprinted through the town, not forgetting to turn his head in every direction. He then remembered the plains. The grassy field. Hyunseung might be there.

Hyunseung,

You’re not leaving. Tell me where you are right now.

He didn’t forget to send that text before making his way up the hill, the sweat already well on his body. Even if it was night and the sun wasn’t out, it was still hot. Junhyung didn’t remember what the temperature was though; he didn’t feel the beads of perspiration trickling down his cheeks from the top of his forehead. He didn’t realize he was panting for air by the time he was half way up the hill. He didn’t realize anything else. All he knew was his goal was the top. His goal was Hyunseung.

He received a new message.

Is it really that hard to guess?

Junhyung didn’t even have to think about the message to know he was getting warmer. He was going in the right direction, and he knew it.

He appeared on the top of the hill, and scanned it over. No trees, grass, and Hyunseung.

As expected.

He approached the boy, and Hyunseung didn’t look up. He simply lay on his back, gazing at the stars just as he did the previous night. Junhyung sat beside him and stared forward. He looked over at Hyunseung, then glanced up at the sky.

“You didn’t run away.”

“Of course I didn’t. It’s not like I have a place to go anyway.”

Junhyung looked down at him, trying to figure out what was going through that head of his. “You’re way too dramatic, Seung.”

Hyunseung shot him a quick glare, then returned his focus to the stars. “Am not.”

Junhyung smiled a bit. At least Hyunseung was talking to him. He was glad he wasn’t pushing him away and ignoring him.

Then he remembered he had done that the whole day. He face palmed.

Hyunseung glanced at him, raising an eyebrow. “…What?”

Junhyung sighed, his gaze falling to the grass. He plucked at a few random blades and pulled them out of the ground. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for avoiding you all day…”

Hyunseung stared. “Not sorry enough.”

Junhyung blinked at the other boy. “Why?”

Hyunseung, when he met the other boy’s eyes, looked away. He looked up at the sky, and Junhyung could see the simple, light blush coating his flawless cheeks. Hyunseung furrowed his brows, distracting himself from the other.

“I don’t like it when people ignore me,” he suddenly spat. “And just because I gave you a chance to be my friend doesn’t mean you’re an exception!” he turned over, so his back was facing Junhyung, and pouted his lips unconsciously. He stared at the grass below him, still feeling a bit of warmth tinting his face and neck.

Junhyung paused a moment, taking in what he said, then smiled. He realized how embarrassed the other must feel, and he bit back a laugh at the thought. Junhyung then pondered.

He is kinda…cute.

In an odd way. Isn’t he?

Is it just me?

Junhyung watched the other boy’s back, but didn’t miss the way Hyunseung was awkwardly tugging at the grass blades, just as Junhyung had done earlier. He smiled again, leaning forward a bit. Hyunseung froze in place when he felt a warm breath graze over his ear. He felt bumps growing on his arms, and despite the warm weather, suddenly felt cold. He tensed up a bit when Junhyung let out another breath right beside his ear.

“Hyunseung…” Junhyung breathed. “…I’m sorry. Honestly and truthfully sorry.”

Hyunseung stayed in the same spot, not moving a muscle. “I don’t believe you.”

Junhyung abruptly turned the other over, so he was on his back. Hyunseung’s doe-eyes widened a little bit as he was met with dark, chocolate ones. He opened his mouth a bit to protest to Junhyung’s actions, but he could really only find the strength to stare back, and just wish that the other would speak first.

Junhyung leaned in a little closer, his locks hanging due to gravity. “What do I have to do to prove to you I mean it?”

Hyunseung’s widened eyes gradually went back to normal, and he blinked a couple times, most likely pondering on the comment. He must’ve settled on something, because his hand rose from the ground, ever so slowly, and traveled up to the back of Junhyung’s neck, giving the other boy a light tug downward.

“Kiss me.”

Junhyung ignored the way his heart rate increased. He ignored the glint of challenge that sparkled in Hyunseung’s eyes, and he ignored the way his hands threatened to tremble. He swallowed one time, inching closer to the other. His eyes closed and he pushed forward gently, pressing his lips onto the others.

Unlike the last kiss, this one wasn’t as quick. This one was slow, passionate, but also sweet. Junhyung just stayed there, comfortably on Hyunseung’s lips.

He never opened his eyes once to see what Hyunseung looked like during the kiss, and when he pulled away, he kind of regretted it. He wondered if the other closed his eyes too.

He looked down at Hyunseung, who was looking up at him, that blank expression washing over his face. Hyunseung’s hand dropped from Junhyung’s neck, and he simply stared. Junhyung made a questioning face, then squeezed the other boy’s cheek gently.

“Yah.”

Hyunseung moved from the grip of Junhyung’s hand. “Stop it.”

Junhyung paused, then frowned, moving his hand away. “Then stop making that blank face all the time.”

Hyunseung blinked. “What blank face?”

Junhyung laughed a bit, pointing down at the other. “That one! You always make it when you’re spaced out!”

Hyunseung stared. “I get spaced out?”

Junhyung leaned in again, lips hovering over the others, just barely brushing against them. “All the time,” he murmured.

The walk home was quiet.

It was a nice quiet though. Not awkward whatsoever.

The pair sauntered down the dark streets, the only light from the occasional street lights that were placed on street corners. Junhyung was busy thinking of an excuse for his dad. He knew he shouldn’t be out this late and he didn’t even tell his dad about it. Junhyung sighed, thinking his dad is probably worried sick.

Hyunseung glanced over at the other, then quickly, but hesitantly, moved his hand over, grabbing Junhyung’s. Junhyung looked over, meeting Hyunseung’s gaze. Hyunseung gaze a light, reassuring squeeze to the other’s hand, and Junhyung didn’t miss the red crawling over his face. Junhyung smiled, interlocking their fingers.

The silence dragged on, which neither of the boys seemed to mind, considering neither of them struck up a conversation. They just walked, hand in hand, through the peacefully quiet town.

Then a thought struck Junhyung.

Hyunseung wouldn’t be here forever.

He’d have to leave sometime.

He looked over at the other boy, who had his eyes closed in tranquility. There was a light smile on his lips.

Junhyung’s heart felt heavy.

They made it home, and made sure to stop holding hands when they entered the house. Junhyung’s dad instantaneously appeared, Terri at his side. They had shocked expressions, as expected.

“Junhyung! Hyunseung! Where have you been?!” Junhyung’s dad said, obvious anxiousness in his voice and face.

Junhyung kicked his shoes off. “Dad, relax. We just went for a walk and we kind of lost track of time.”

Terri sighed, her hand falling over her chest in relief. “Oh, thank goodness…”

Junhyung’s dad didn’t seem satisfied though. “You aren’t allowed to go out that late anymore.”

Junhyung looked up. “What?”

“You heard me.”

“Dad, that’s not fair!” Junhyung’s voice was now rising.

Hyunseung suddenly butt in. “It’s my fault.”

Junhyung’s dad looked at him, eyes widening a bit.

“I made Junhyung come get me. I went to the store and got kind of lost on the way back, considering it was dark. That’s why I asked you for Junhyung’s number. I needed to send him a text telling him to come get me. I’m sorry, Mr. Yong.”

Junhyung’s dad stared a bit, then glanced back over at his son. He gave a sigh. “Okay, fine. But you need to be careful from now on. I don’t want you guys getting hurt.” he locked eyes with Junhyung. “Junhyung, you take him everywhere he needs to go, okay? If he wants to leave the house, you’re going with him.”

Junhyung nodded, biting back a smile.

Junhyung lie on his bed, sighing. This was more than he could wish for, because he liked Hyunseung. He really liked him, and he didn’t want him to go. He didn’t want him to leave and never come back. They’ve already made too many memories together and Junhyung doesn’t want to leave that. He likes those memories.

He likes doing things with Hyunseung.

He likes him.

A sudden beep interrupted his thoughts. He flipped open his phone.

From: Unknown
Still awake? :P

Junhyung knew it had to be Hyunseung’s number. He quickly saved the number into his phone before typing a reply.

To: Hyunseung
Of course I am.

From: Hyunseung
Good, because I can’t sleep whatsoever. I want to talk to someone.

To: Hyunseung
Okay. Talk to me. :)

From: Hyunseung
I said talk, not text.

Junhyung didn’t need to question the text. He threw his phone aside and stood. He crept out of his room, inspecting the halls for any people before tiptoeing his way to Hyunseung’s door. He turned the knob slowly, stepping in. He closed it behind him, careful to make the least amount of noise as possible. He then turned, seeing Hyunseung on his bed with a phone in his hands.

Junhyung grinned, approaching the other boy slowly. Hyunseung tried not to, but he couldn’t help the warm feeling that spread throughout his cheeks. The way Junhyung was coming over at such an excruciating pace, not even breaking eye contact once, it just made him feel a little embarrassed.

Junhyung stood before Hyunseung after what Hyunseung thought was eons of walking. He leaned down, gingerly dropping a kiss on Hyunseung’s cheek. He then climbed over him into the other side of the bed.

“How are you doing on this fine evening?” Junhyung said, reaching out to grab Hyunseung’s hand and hold it in his own.

“Fine,” Hyunseung croaked.

Junhyung glanced over, meeting the other’s eyes again. Hyunseung saw the sadness and worry in his eyes, and raised his eyebrows in response.

“You’re leaving,” Junhyung said, answering the unspoken question.

Hyunseung gave a sad, bittersweet smile. “Not right now.”

Junhyung shook his head, squeezing Hyunseung’s hand tighter. “But you are. Eventually.”

Hyunseung sighed, breaking his gaze away as he stared at the wall. “…Yeah. Eventually.”

There was a silence. Junhyung leaned in after a few seconds, kissing Hyunseung’s lips. Hyunseung blinked a couple times, and before he could comprehend it, Junhyung was already pulling back.

“You’re not leaving. I don’t care what the hell I have to do, you are not leaving.”

Hyunseung smiled, giving a light chuckle. “Okay. I’m not leaving.”

Hyunseung kissed Junhyung, getting even with him from before. He smiled again, this time not as sad.

“I’m not leaving.”

He wished he could keep that promise.~

10rtl, junseung
