Doctor Who - Let's Kill Hitler!

Aug 31, 2011 08:39

So! I think my Doctor Who thoughts have finally coalesced into coherency, and also I’m trying not to post about Homestuck more than once every other day, which means it’s time for a “Let's Kill Hitler” reaction post!

I have to admit, I was really nervous when I saw the title of this episode. It just - what? Lets kill Hitler? Could there BE a more un-Doctor-like thing to say? Also, do we HAVE to do the Nazi thing in every TV show ever? :( Thank goodness it all had a rational explanation in the end. Well. As rational as this show gets, anyhow. *grin*

I found Mels really annoying right up until she regenerated into River, particularly because I’d heard through the tumblr rumour mill that she was being groomed as the next companion - I just kept telling myself, “Remember how much you used to hate Donna, remember how much you used to hate Donna...” Then suddenly she was River, and all the obnoxious stuff she’d been doing made a lot of sense, and the whole schtick is infinitely less frustrating on the re-watch.

BUT ANYHOW, it was Alex Kingston and I was SQUEEING LIKE MAD because, a) Alex Kingston! and b) River Song! and c) young crazy River Song is brilliant. I just - she was the same character, she was very much the same character, but at the same time she really did feel so much younger, in comparison to the way Alex normally acts her. And, obviously, quite a bit crazier. She felt wild; she felt like a teenager trying to act grown-up and devil-may-care, whereas River has previously always felt like she was grown-up and devil-may-care. A subtle yet terribly important difference, and damn do I LOVE when actors can pull off things like this!

I wish Amy had got Melody back when she was a kid, but of course we knew it wasn’t going to happen and this was just about the next best thing Moffat could have given us, so I forgive him. In Moffat we trust, etc. I love that Amy got to share her childhood with River, that River got to see her Mum and Dad grow up and fall in love, and oh my God could young Rory have been any more adorable?

On the other hand, young Amy was kind of an ass, but honestly who didn’t call THAT one? Frankly, OLD Amy is kind of an ass, albeit in a charming sort of way. I can definitely see Amy growing up to be a lot like River, actually - channeling that sort of wildly selfish-yet-epic approach to life into something that transcends “awesome” and hits “fucking badass, oh my dear lord”. Although I suppose it might be more accurate to say that River grew up to be a lot like… ack, timey-wimey. OH WELL.

“So I was just on my way to a gay gypsy bar mitzvah for the disabled…” made me laugh like a loon; the Doctor demanding that his voice interface be someone he likes, oh, god, no, someone he likes who doesn’t make him feel horrifically guilty - no - no - goddamnit - made me get all teary. Also, can I just say I WHOLEHEARTEDLY APPROVE of this trend of working Wee Amelia into as many episodes as possible? That kid may be my favorite actor on the whole damn show, I kid you not. And and and the way the Doctor and River interacted, and he kept telling her the rules, and they were playing mental chess with GUNS and POISONS and then she beats him with a KISS and then HER FACE WHEN SHE FLEW THE TARDIS and he STOPPED TO CHANGE INTO A TOP HAT and - !

I think what I might be saying here is, the actual plot with the vengeful time-travelling tiny people in a robot suit had pretty much exactly zero influence on my enjoyment of this episode. DOCTOR. And RIVER. And WEE AMELIA. And ADORABLE RORY. And apparently that is all I need to be happy!

In conclusion: moar Who now, please!
