So, I got into a little discussion on Dave and Busters tickets.
I know there's a number of people out there who take their ticket winnings seriously, especially if hard to find items (like launch-XBox 360) become available. There's a lot of theories, but it boils down to two parts.
1. Find a machine, and figure out how often you hit the jackpot/bonus or equivalent. Find a few different machines where you can win semi-regularly.
This boils down to two factors: Your skill, and the difficulty of the machine. Of course, the same game tends to vary from place to place, and from machine to machine. Even then, one machine can have its difficulty adjusted now and them. Even so, with a small amount of trial and error, you should be able to find a winnable game.
For D&B games, you want to know how often to expect a win of over 100 tickets or so. After all, if there aren't any big wins, then the game isn't at fun, and that's bad too.
TIP: visit D&B on a crowded period, like Friday or Saturday night. Note where jackpots are being hit, or people are winning big. Or note the machines where the jackpot counter is always being reset. Those are good signs.
2. With that information, figure out the actual rate of tickets per chip on each good machine
This is a little more complex, since this is based on the price of the game, how often you hit the big win, and the minor payouts when you miss the jackpot. To make it simpler, you could just play a whole bunch and add up the mess of tickets and divide by the number of credits.
TIP: avoid those dropping coin based games: in a long term average, expect one coin to fall for every one coin you put in. This put things closer to 8 tickets per chip, which is pretty low.
Optional: You can also figure out how fast it'd take to win a few thousand tickets, but that's only if you're in a hurry to amass a pile of winning.
Yes, you do have to start over when the machines change in difficulty, payout, or price (and they do change a lot!) But after awhile, it's not too difficult to get a sense of what's valuable.
The games I play average 15 tickets / chip, plus additional bonuses. It's not the best among all games, but it was good enough for me. And I have fun doing it, too. You should, as well. :)
