Last one to leave, please turn of the lights....

We took a coworker to lunch today at Souplantation - Thursday is his last day in this office. He put in for a transfer to the Eureka office, on the grounds that his job can be done from pretty much any Fish & Game office, and his wife's family lives in that area. Management bought off on it, they're selling their house and off they go. He told me his wife (a nurse) had put in all the time in southern CA she was going to, and it was coming down to moving up there or her taking off without him. He has a horrible commute all the way from Corona, too - sometimes two hours each way, and the toll lanes on the 91 don't always help.

I confess to twinges of jealousy. I would absolutely love to transfer to Humboldt County. I went to college there, I love the rain, and I like small towns. Being close to a university promotes at least some culture. And redwoods! Right in the middle of them! It's beautiful up there, and there will never be the amount of development that there is here; However, I could no more uproot John from this area than I could one of those redwoods. His parents live here, as well as his grandmother now, and all of his friends (my friends and family are more spread out). He says he grew up in a small town, and doesn't want to live in one, or have his kids grow up in one (although a twenty miles from Detroit doesn't seem like it would be totally without urban influence). Also, my father is turning 80 this year, and I don't think we could go off and leave him by himself. My brother lives an hour's drive away, but we often don't see him for months at a time, and my other brother lives out of state, so we're pretty much already ensconced in the role of elder care givers. Dad is in fairly good shape, but his behavior recently is really reminding me of my grandmother (his mom).

Ah well. Maybe after I retire...

work, wishes
