OWbN and how it should be approached

Why do we let some people's opinions get to us?

I keep getting told what others think of me. Others who are so wrapped up in their hobby that they gun for me or other STs/Coords/CMs OOC, slander our reputation, and generally interpret everything we do as evil and out to ruin their fun or compromise their RP.

You know what, screw them. Its a hobby. If they can't figure that out, its not our (ST/Coords/CMs) problem. They will always whine and be unhappy in their hobby until they realize its just that, a hobby.

So your PC has things go wrong for them, deal with it. Your PC is NOT you. I had an ST and other PCs screw mine over. My PC is still suffering the effects of it, and probably will for the rest of his existance in LARP. So did I sit and whine and say that the involved ST and the other players were the most evil bastards on Earth? No. Did I say they cost me X amount of months of RP? No. Why? Because its a hobby, and getting that worked up over a hobby is just silly.

And, I kept playing my PC. He dealt with his bad reputation. Even after all the shit piled on him, he still came out on top in the eyes of those who know him. Why is that? Because I kept role playing him, rolled with the situation, and turned it around. Things didnt go the way he wanted, but he kept going. I knew full well the choices he made could get him screwed, and I accepted them when things went bad. I wish others could figure this out to see it as a hobby, not life.

Not eveyone is going to agree with how you view things in your hobby. There will be disputes. When the disputes get to the point they affect you outside your hobby, its time to take a break.

I've talked with many people, and they all ask me why I put up with so much of the flak I get over what seem like stupid little things. I honestly tell them its because I like my hobby, and most the people I share it with. I may not agree with others, but I will always hear them out, so as to see if maybe I am missing an angle or piece of information. Education and learning don't stop once you move out of your parent's house - they keep going until you die.

There is also one more thing I do, that seems to set me aside from many others. I don't always take what some people say at face value. My closest friends may bite their tongues to protect me when I'm feeling down - it happens. So, I seek others opinions at times. Even those who I dont normally talk to. I dont trust just one source of information, cause that leads to problems. Seek more sources. The more you rely on one source, or just your friends for hobby advice, especially in a drama filled situation, the more likely you are to get jaded or one-sided advice. This is most crucial when you are in a position of authority. When the enjoyment of others rests in your hands, you have an obligation to look into all angles before making calls.
