Character Information:

Character Name: Nathan Petrelli
Age: 40
Canon: Heroes

Appearance:

Nathan's a very good looking Italian-American man, with a strong jaw, dark features, and politician hair.  He's well groomed (discounting that hobo beard period of his life) and tends to wear expensive power suits.

Personality:

VOTE PETRELLI

Nathan Petrelli is, like his larger than life father before him, a born alpha dog.  No matter what enterprise he's entered, he's found his way to the top of it, and he's well aware of the fact.  Groomed to that sort of power position his entire life, he's a highly intelligent guy (who was valedictorian of his class), and one with sharp instincts that made him a District Attorney people feared.  Even his own father admitted he's like a bulldog when he's after something - he'll latch onto it and not let go until he's succeeded, and that stubborn determination has earned him respect and power.  Of course, it helps that he's also an incredibly charismatic man, with a thousand watt smile and slick way with words.  He's skilled at forging social connections, charming women, public speaking, and self promoting.  He has an easy humor and diplomatic nature, that make it easy for him to get people on his side.

With his natural leadership abilities and military background, Nathan's nothing if not a decisive man with a plan, who can quickly come up with immediate actions to take in a crisis, and execute them without a lot of hesitation.

He's also, like most people in his incredibly Italian family, very loyal to them, and will take extreme strides to do what's best for them, because of the strong emotional ties they have.  He sees it as his personal birthright to take charge of family affairs.

Nathan's driving ambition in entering politics was to do good in the world and make a lasting impact on the lives of others.  He desires to live a life of both personal fulfillment and greater meaning, and knows his strengths well.

He's also very much a man's man, and lives up to the chisel jaw and square shoulders.  He maintains an outward toughness in most situations and has stereotypically masculine interests. However, he's far from heartless by any stretch.  In fact, underneath his tough exterior, he's got a sentimental heart, and genuine compassion for those around him.

Nathan Petrelli:  leader, political powerhouse, family man - the one we need.

Nathan Petrelli:  THE SORDID TRUTH

Don't be fooled by the charming facade.  To be honest, Nathan Petrelli is, quite simply, a dick.   His natural 'leadership' abilities also amount to a degree of stubborn self-righteousness that can make him more or less into an oversized bully at times.   To get to the top the way that he has, he's had to adopt the sort of techniques that lead to that kind of accumulation of power and prestige.  This means that his road to success has been peppered with questionably moral, ruthless tactics, which is really a staple of the Petrelli family.  He was the pawn of a conspiracy set in motion to place him as the eventual President of the United States, which would have meant going along with a plan to set off a bomb in New York City and kill thousands in order to unite the people behind him.  While in the end, he rejected this plan, he certainly... waited until the last freaking second to do so, which shows how twisted his personal sense of morals are.  He wants to do what's right, but with an askew moral compass, it can be really easy for other people to talk him into supporting immoral decisions, just by appealing to the right aspects of his personality.

While he does have all that natural charisma, that isn't always a GOOD thing.  It also means he's a pretty skilled liar, and great at talking himself out of things, or talking other people into things he ... shouldn't.  He is, after all, a politician.

Nathan's habit of taking decisive action can sometimes be a downfall as well - he tends to act in extremes, and with his problems swimming above the moral red line, that can mean he takes drastic actions that end up harming a great deal of other people.

Calling Nathan loyal to his family, of course, also ignores the fact that he cheated on his wife when she ended up in a wheelchair.  Despite his confidence, he's full of self loathing, wracked with guilt over how his ability to fly manifesting during the accident kept him from being killed while his wife suffered.  After Peter's supposed death, when Nathan helped him avert the destruction of New York, Nathan was practically immobilized by depression, guilt, and grief, and fell into heavy drinking that spurred his wife to separate from him, and take their sons with her.  Not to mention the fact that Nathan put his political interests and anxiety over the impact having a biological daughter surface during election time would appear over his desire to meet Claire when he learned she existed.   His attachment to his family IS incredibly strong, but the Petrelli family is more like the mafia than the Brady Bunch, meaning that loyalty is often much more unhealthy than it is admirable.  Their intense emotional connection leads to extremes as well: willingness to kill to protect each other, or to tear one another down entirely, in the case of Nathan and his father.

Nathan might come off as a golden boy because of his successes, however he feels personally like he is only as successful as he is because that's what has been expected of him his entire life.  He doesn't feel like he's necessarily better or smarter or more suited to the things he excels at, but he feels as if it's his duty and role to fulfill those things, because that's Who He Is to the people who matter to him.   His self-esteem, therefore, is directly tied to the way others view him, and as others come to hate him for actions he takes, his own self-loathing tends to skyrocket.  This is also what makes him so easy to manipulate.  His mother claims one of his greatest weaknesses is that he cares TOO much, and will too easily bend to appease others, as much as he wants to appear tough on the outside.

Background: Here.

Canon point:   From the end of Season Two!  I wanted to play him from a point where he was well developed, but in Season Four, he's... dead, and I didn't feel like dealing with his bizarre super religious period in S3, or grieving hobo beard period in early S2, so I went for the... part in between those.  :'D  Where he is played most closely to type.

Special Abilities:

Nathan's force sensitive, though the only thing he's naturally adept at using it for right now is flight.  He could potentially learn other stuff, but it's not really on his list of stuff to do.  8|

Sect:  Civilian

Job: I'm interested in him being a Senator, or at least political representative of the Revanites (let me know what works best!).  I'm hoping to bring him in as having been here for about 11 months already.

Samples:

First Person:    Here.

Third Person: Here

Anything Else: Nathan and Peter have both been living out in the city for awhile, so they have a place together there, and don't need an apartment room!  He's too good for crappy apartments, sitting around drinking blue milk with the normies.  Vote for Petrelli - it's what Jolee Bindo would do.
