Kitty’s baby
Kitty remembered her first doll. She was blond-haired with rosy cheeks, mischievous brown eyes and dressed in a pink ballerina costume. Grandma Ida said she reminded her of Kitty. She had Kitty’s grace. It became Kitty’s Grace.
Kevin, too, loved Grace, and sometimes Kitty entrusted her baby to her little brother’s care with promises to look after her as the apple of his eyes.
When she was broken, Kevin was severely punished. He was so inconsolable that Kitty believed Tommy was the real culprit. He did not like to see a boy playing with a doll, though a few years later he would prefer his brother to do so.
William and Saul tried to repair Grace, but her grace was gone.
Kitty kept her still. She settled Grace on a wooden chair in her room, not ready to part with her daughter yet. Grace witnessed Kitty growing up, and when she left for college, the once adored doll finished her life lock away in the attic.

Kevin wrapped his arms round his sister, “Congratulations Kit! You’ll be a terrific mother.” Eyes moist with emotion, he handed her a worn carton. “I thought Grace would love to have her mother’s Grace.”
