Another Secret
Three weeks already since William’s world crumbled into pieces when Kevin slipped out. If only someone had broken the heavy silence with some witty banter, maybe William wouldn’t have stared at Kevin in disbelief as though stabbed in the heart.
Kitty believed Kevin had always been their father’s favorite: a look-alike, same blue eyes, smile and laugh, more cerebral than athletic, more prone to study than to party with his friends.
Kitty knew by heart how William looked proudly at Kevin. Now, she could only decipher denial and anger in William’s eyes. She remembered from a psychology class that they were the first stages of grief.
William was mourning the Kevin he admired: his mirror image.
When Kitty entered, her father was staring at a picture on the staircase wall. When Kevin passed by, Kitty intercepted the look on their father’s face, and believed he would reach the final stage soon enough: acceptance.
William was not angry with Kevin for being gay, he was angry with his son for being braver than he ever was. Kevin faced the truth no matter the consequences. He never did.
William was angry with Kevin for proving him wrong, another secret buried with him.
