A Special Gift

Scotty parked his car in front of Nora’s house at precisely seven to ten, relieved to arrive not only on time, but also with ten minutes early just as Julia and Tommy stopped in the alley behind his Ranchero. Immediately Tommy asked him his assistance. Together they carried wine and champagne cases in the kitchen while Julia followed with a large carton box.

As Nora lifted the corner of the lid to make sure it was conformed to her order, Scotty peeked at its content and said, “Birthday cake? Whose birthday is it?”

Then it hit him, “Kevin’s! How did I miss that?” He saw again the marked page on his date book. Nora tried to be supportive by saying she never memorized dates either.

Scotty was turning pale. “I don’t have a present!”

“That’s okay darling, he’ll understand!”

“Maybe I should just go get something?” Scotty said.

“Now?”

“Well, tell him I- -”

“Tell him what?” Kevin asked, making his entrance by the back door.

“I should really get a lock at that door! What’s the front door for, if everybody keeps sneaking in here?”

“Oh, please, Mom! You know the kitchen is where the action is!” Kevin said.

A quick hug to Julia, and Kevin came nearer to Scotty whose contrite face suddenly alerted him. Julia moved to the living room as Nora gestured they needed ten minutes to have everything organized before Scotty could let Kevin in. Kevin gently put his arm around Scotty’s shoulder. “You okay?”

Scotty dragged Kevin in the pantry without saying a word. He pushed Kevin against the wall, his tongue eager, his breath heavy. Kevin did not have time to understand what had gotten into his usually tender lover. He did not have time to say a word that Scotty’s lips touched his. Hands tugged his shirt. He wanted to protest. No, he did not want to protest. He could not get out of his mind that two rooms separated them from the others, his mother... his brothers and sisters... not to mention Robert ... Oh! And the kids! They could not possibly make out with Paige and Cooper in the other room!

All right, he had to say something, do something. They could sneak out of the kitchen, run upstairs and lock themselves into a bathroom, bedroom, or even closet. Well, no time for kidding. Kevin was not sure he could hold his tongue a little longer, but Scotty figured because a second later he was back on his feet to shut Kevin up with a kiss. Perfect timing. When Kevin’s breath went back to a normal pace, he quickly zipped close his fly and whispered, “Never underestimate the usefulness of a dishcloth.”

Scotty confident expression told its own story.

“So what is this all about, Scotty?” Kevin said as he put some fresh water on his face to calm himself down, and regain his complexion.

“Happy birthday!” came Scotty’s sole response along with a kiss. What is a happy birthday without a kiss? It is a package deal!

A look of blank astonishment spread on Kevin’s face, Scotty explained, “I forgot your birthday! I didn’t get you anything. I’m sorry!” He sighed incapable of hiding his embarrassment, “Then I remembered what my grand-mother told me, unforgettable gifts come from the bottom of the heart.”

“I can totally say that you put all your heart in your gift.” Kevin blushed.

“So you liked it?” A mischievous glimmer appeared in Scotty’s eyes, “Great because that was just the first part!”

Scotty turned around to reach the door, but Kevin stopped him. “What do you mean the first part?”

“You heard me!”

“Okay, then. When is the next part... or what is the next part?” Kevin was now worried that Scotty might want to have it off in the middle of the dinning room.

“I, for one, can keep a secret!” Scotty smirked.

“There you are! Looking for some privacy?”

Kevin startled at his mother barging in, his looking down did not help to hide from her something not quite kosher happened in her pantry. When Kevin looked up again he froze. She was just a few inches away from a particular piece of material. He reached out his hand and managed to throw it away in the pantry without her noticing, as Scotty bit his lip not to burst out laughing.

Kevin sensed that Scotty’s unidentified plans foreshadowed an intense but nerve-racking evening.

**********

When he made his entrance in the living room, Kevin expected a casual dinner, if this ever happened with his family, but certainly not to find thirty guests, at a rough guess, laughing, eating and getting drunk. If he had known, he would not have let Scotty trick him into doing dirty things in the pantry, well, he would have objected at least.

Family members and friends kept him busy. He was not completely paying attention and offered polite thanks and handshakes. He could not chase away Scotty’s words. What did he mean? Kevin observed Scotty reveling in the food that for once he did not wait on but merely enjoyed, along with a glass of wine and Uncle Saul to keep him company.

The guests savored the buffet, the beverages Tommy graciously offered, and Kevin took advantage of a moment of relative peace to take Scotty aside and bluntly demand justifications.

Scotty motioned Kevin to the study and closed the door. Kevin expected explanations.

“Actions speak louder than words,” Scotty said pinning Kevin against the wall.

Kevin felt weak when it came to turning down someone whose sole motivations were good. In between Scotty’s ferocious frenzy and brutal busses, Kevin lost all notions of when, where and why.

“What has gotten into you?”

“I just had oysters... with ginger salsa... and wine.”

Fifteen minutes later, they left the study with big smiles on their faces. (Kevin is a devoted democrat.) If the desk could talk, he would probably have a lot to say. The oval office would even be jealous.

**********

The party was going full swing, only with one minor difference, Scotty stayed as far away from Kevin as he could, but Kevin did not appreciate it. He was looking forward for part three. Nora noticed how Scotty avoided Kevin and decided to act upon it.

She asked Julia to get Scotty, whereupon she urged him and Kevin to have a talk and patch things up, scared this could stir another unfortunate public washing of dirty laundry.

Obviously, when Nora is in no crisis under my roof mode “especially when I am hosting a birthday party that includes many friends, acquaintances and neighbors,” she is in charge. Neither Scotty nor Kevin could articulate a word; Nora forced them outside to solve whatever issue they had to solve to come back hand in hand, like the happy couple everyone expected them to be.

Scotty and Kevin laughed of the accidental misunderstanding.

“Just when I try to play hard to get, and tease you a bit, your mother throws you into my arms.”

“Well, I can thank her because I was getting impatient.”

“Oh! You did?”

This time, Kevin accepted to pursue Scotty’s game without hesitation; but festivities were a long time coming.

He thought Scotty intended to kiss him when he heard him murmur, “Ever done it in a car?”

“Oh, come on Scotty! We’re not teenagers anymore!”

Kevin eventually nodded, and Scotty asked again, “How about a senator’s car?”

**********

Getting busy in Kitty and Robert’s car was not exactly the kind of plan Kevin had in mind for his birthday. The more comfortable, large and soft backseat of Robert’s car turned out practical for more discretion than Scotty’s Ranchero.

Kisses caresses and zips, well, bliss, then steps and voices. Kitty and Robert! Trying to make himself as inconspicuous as possible, Scotty saw Kevin’s panic-stricken face and sensed his shaky pulse. Scotty had never been in such an embarrassing position and never thought he would be, but sometimes Kevin made him do things that were far from his comfort zone.

Holding their breath in the back seat of the car, lying on top of each other, they kept still for what seemed to last an eternity. Their hearts skipped a beat when Kitty opened the trunk, and picked Kevin’s birthday presents.

Robert’s voice finally fainted. Steps sounds stopped. They sighed with relief, then suddenly startled at a knock on the door. Kevin hit his head straightening up, and accidentally trod on Scotty’s feet, who let out a cry of pain. Throughout the smoked-glass window, Kitty could not make out much, but it was enough blackmail material for her to be satisfied.

“Do you want me to stall? It’s almost cake time!” They heard Kitty going back to the house, chuckling.

“Do you think she’ll keep her mouth shut?” Kevin asked Scotty as he stepped out of the car to tidy himself up.

Once out, Scotty gave Kevin an encouragement kiss and answered, “not a chance, she’s a Walker!”

**********

As they entered the lightless living room, the guests welcomed Kevin and Scotty with applause and cheers, and an a capella version of happy birthday perfectly in tune, thanks to the PFLAG choir members being kind enough to send some representatives.

The kids claimed Kevin’s attention straight away, demanding he blew his candles. Nora asked Kitty who held Lizzie on her lap to make room for Kevin on the couch. As he took place, he heard her murmur something about the couch cushions not being as comfortable as the backseat of Robert’s car, but Kevin choose to ignore her, not to look suspicious.

Presents were opened. Cake was served. Tongues loosened. Sarah made a speech thanking everyone for coming, and Scotty for being such a wonderful addition to Kevin’s life and the Walker family, and everything went off like a dream.

Scotty, on the other hand, could not forgive himself for forgetting Kevin’s birthday.

The guests monopolized Kevin a long time and Kevin feared Scotty would feel rejected. Kevin’s sole desire was to find Scotty and apologize. He glimpsed at his other half going upstairs and took his chance to join him.

“Hey, hon! I was looking for you, I’ve missed you!”

“Happy birthday Kevin!”

Kevin thanked him with the brightest and most genuine smile Scotty had seen illuminating Kevin’s face in a while, it was enough for Scotty to let himself go again. Enthusiasm carried them away. At first, Kevin thought it was a good idea, until he realized they were making out on his mother’s bed.

“Really... really... this is so bad... an idea ... such a bad idea!”

“Yet, so exciting!” Scotty whispered in Kevin’s neck. “No worries. I’ll keep mum about it.”

Kevin blinked, and Scotty did not immediately understand. “Sorry!”

“We should really go... Rebecca wants to take pictures... if we don’t... they’ll look for us... Mom will send Kitty or Sarah and they’re too old to see me naked.”

“They don’t know what they’re missing!”

“Was that supposed to be a compliment?” Kevin let go off Scotty’s embrace to straighten up and proposed, “We can always go back home and finish this properly.”

“That’s part of the plan, Kev!”

Reluctantly, they left the room to go back in the living room where Rebecca was ready for her first official Walker photo session. Nora saw the gathering as the perfect opportunity to play the tape of Kevin’s graduation ceremony, and if they had time, they could switch to his first trial or choose from Nora’s collection of Kevin’s milestones caught on tape.

Kevin and Scotty used this as their cue to escape.

**********

A quintessential example of Scotty not being used to unpredictable coupling is that he did not verify beforehand that the area was secure and unreachable to intruders.

Kevin’s full panic flew over to Scotty when Kitty came in the kitchen, dizzy and drunk, which turned out to be an advantage actually, because a) she bought that Scotty knelt before Kevin to lace his shoes, which incidentally was funny because laced moccasins hadn’t been created yet, unless Kevin wasn’t aware they had and b) because Scotty stopped aghast and paralyzed like a kid caught in the act, which once out of his predicament, would feel the obligation to work twice as hard.

When Kitty left, Kevin’s relief came along with an adrenaline rush. Any action put on hold increased the risk of exposure and therefore put a term to a game Kevin was getting used to, if not starting to appreciate.

However, Kitty’s irruption changed Kevin’s prospects, “well, Scotty, if you want to put something in your mouth, how about food?”

“Chocolate, or honey or maple syrup could tempt me, but wait, I don’t have a spoon!”

Scotty looked pointedly at Kevin with the firm intention to finish what he had started, “I might as well lick it off your body!”

“Wait! Kitty came in, anyone could, Paige or Cooper...”

“They’re sleeping upstairs with Lizzie.”

“Or mom...”

“Kevin! You said so yourself, kitchen is where the action is!”

Kevin was out of arguments, he realized he was already ready in anticipation, “That’s no fair, your blowjobs are as addictive as your cookies, when you’ve tasted them, you want more.”

“You can enjoy them simultaneously, if you like!”

Kevin raised his eyes and sighed at his own weakness.

Scotty tilted his head downward, “nothing’s more exciting than danger! Objection overruled!”

Kevin thanked Scotty for that, because otherwise he would have missed the climax of the day, in every possible sense.

**********

Nora, busy in the kitchen cleaning up, got a glimpse at the boys kissing; a smile spread across her face, she was very pleased she forced them to reconcile.

However, she did not witnessed how Scotty enticed Kevin to plunge into the pool with him.

“I didn’t bring a suit.” Kevin knew he probably had one or two in one of the closets upstairs.

“That’s okay, you don’t need one.”

“What are you doing?”

“Are you sure you don’t want to join me in? Never had a moon bath!”

“Moon bath?! You’re the devil you know that!”

“So my friends were right, you’re uptight!”

“I’m not uptight!” Kevin retorted. “I’m just very aware of my family tonight!”

“You’re very aware of your family every second of every day, Kevin! Besides, I don’t see anyone else but you and me here!” Scotty slowly undressed, and threw his clothes on a garden chair.

“Come on, Kevin you can’t resist me!”

“I will so regret that!”

Once they entered the water, Scotty demanded his fair share of touches and kisses, until he stripped off entirely. Kevin felt weak past midnight, and yet he was not that drunk, but Scotty playing dangerous was incredibly irresistible.

“I want you in your birthday suit, birthday boy!” Scotty said tugging at Kevin’s drenched briefs.

Meanwhile, the guests gone, the Walkers siblings and spouses all meet in the kitchen looking for Kevin to say goodbye before going back to their respective residences.

Noticing the door to the backyard open, Kitty walked out, everyone followed, and some wished they had not because tumbling on your brother getting it on, was not the best sight one could be given to see. Kevin and Scotty unaware of the spectators continued their joyful party until Justin arriving in the backyard exclaimed, “are those clothes?!”

Kevin almost drowned in embarrassment and everyone thought they would die of shame.

Kitty suddenly sober, almost chocked. “Getting busy in my husband car wasn’t enough for you?!”

Robert stared at his wife and brothers-in-law, “what?”

The others repeated quite amused, “what?”

“Kevin’s done it in every room of the house!” Tommy commented.

“Except Mom’s bedroom!” Sarah added.

Scotty’s awkward smile did not go unnoticed.

“What? WHAT?” echoed everyone’s voices.

Nora did not hear and came back, trying to keep a straight face, “here are some towels for you guys, for when you’re ... done! You can stay for the night; the guest room’s all yours!”

She placed the towels on the second garden chair, and hurried everyone back to the house, “let’s get them some well-deserved and apparently much needed privacy!” but Nora was not that easily duped, she noticed everyone’s faces covering a secret, “What is it?”

They all left hastily without further ado.

“Don’t worry, kids it’s just a matter of time before Kevin inadvertently spills the beans.”

Kevin and Scotty decided to go back in the house, visit a room with hot water and steam, and a lock on the door. Then they found a good use to the bed Nora granted them, Scotty kept his promise.

“So tell me now, Scotty. What happened today?”

“I gave free rein to my imagination, that’s all!”

“So that meant playing daredevil?!” Kevin asked in between surprise and amusement.

“You surprised?”

“Where was the suit?! And why did you have to wait for a family event to be?”

“As many climaxes as the day you were born, August eight. That was my improvised gift!”

“Lucky me, I wasn’t born January first! What about the year I was born in? 1972!”

“I can bake you 1972 cookies, if you like!”

“If I eat them all, I’m afraid; you won’t touch me ever again.”

“Don’t be silly, I will love you, no matter what!”

“I know, and so will I!”

They kissed good night, and shut off the light to get some rest when Kevin’s voice broke the silence, “Scotty? Just so I know. When is your birthday?”
