Took off with several people to explore Panaji today. We followed a walking tour that was less notable for the landmarks than the various sights and smells along the journey. The extremes of poverty and wealth within spitting distance of each other are pretty startling. Goan Christianity seems to be of the colorful and gaudy Latin American sort. Very interesting. We had lunch at a lovely little place downtown and I finally got my Vindaloo. It was quite tasty. We also got some vegetable Pakoras that turned out to be more like Tempura than the Pakoras I've had in the U.S. Still very good. I narrowly avoided being steamrolled into buying an expensive carpet by the smoothest salesman I've encountered in quite a while. The sure knowledge that upon returning home I'd be testing the carpet's anti-stain capability with my own lifeblood prevented me from purchasing one.
Many pictures taken by the four cameras in our group. I will post a couple of mine behind the cut.
The Church of Immaculate Conception
Shot from behind the Mary statuette. Note the lightbulb halo.
Up near the church I noticed an interesting looking butterfly.
Hard to get a long shot of the Hanuman Temple without wires in the way.
Two sari-clad women going up the stairs to the temple.
