summary: I call you butterfly, as the days go by, the idea that I can’t escape you get’s driven in further.

Jonghyun was only four when he discovered Jinki.

Mother told him not to leave the house at night, because it was too dark, and he might lose his way home. Of all things he told him never to do, number one was probably not to go into the forest behind the house. However, Jonghyun was bored one day, and hey, the forest wouldn’t be going anywhere. It’s not like it was big or anything, his mother drove him to friend’s house all the time. That was right behind it, and the drive was only twenty minutes.

Jonghyun honestly didn’t do it on purpose. He was just sitting on the porch one day, eating cereal. The clock in their house rang, signaling it was nine o’clock. The sky was pitch black, and the landscape was a winter wonderland. Jonghyun was doing a good job at feeding milk to the grass below, as the spoon missed his mouth one to many times.

He marvels the way the snow glitters in the moonlight, the sparkles remind him of the way confetti fell from the popped balloons at his last birthday party. The wind blows softly making a little fuu sound; Jonghyun almost thinks his backyard is trying to tell him a secret. The whole scenery is magical, until he sees a tiny light from the corner of his eye. As he looks over, the view isn’t as beautiful anymore. There’s a small butterfly flying, and it lands on the ground next him.

The butterfly is golden, and Jonghyun decides that it’s more magical than the landscape he was just admiring. He’s never seen anything like it, it’s new, and Jonghyun laughs just thinking about it.

“What’s your name?” He gives a toothy grin, and watches the butterfly spread its wings again, flying around the perimeter of the backyard porch. The moonlight gives it an even radiant glow, and since Jonghyun’s favorite color is gold, the idea of it doesn’t seem plausible. “You don’t have a name? I’ll name you!” He grins at the idea, and looks around for inspiration. He sees his rubber ducky lying on the kitchen floor, and watches as his mother accidently steps on it. It makes a squeak sound, and his mother scolds him for not putting his toys away. He laughs and turns back to the golden treasure saying, “I’m going to name you Jinki! It rhymes with squeaky, and my favorite letter is j.”

The butterfly lands next to him, barely missing a puddle of milk as it shakes its wings. It only stops for a second though, because it instantly gets up and starts flying away, towards the trees in the backdrop. For a second Jonghyun thinks he hears a bell go ring ding dong in his head, and next thing the boy knows, he’s gotten up and run after Jinki.

Jonghyun doesn’t know how much time has passed, but he’s finally reached a clearing where the butterfly perches itself on a branch. He watches light form, and then he’s squinting from the amount of light that’s radiating from the golden butterfly.

He looks up a minute later, and there’s a boy sitting in the animal’s place. He’s around his age, and has chocolate brown hair and extremely light brown eyes - they look almost yellow. The most striking element are the glittering golden wings protruding from his back. Jonghyun then shrieks when he falls off the branch, but the next second he’s right in front of him, and the only thing that he can manage to think of is woah.

“Fly with me,” he smiles, whispering.

Jonghyun is suspended in air the next moment, and he laughs, the kind that’s warm and bubbly and makes other people grin with you. It reminds him of the movie Peter Pan; he just watched it last night with his father. “Are we going to Neverland?”

“What’s Neverland?”

“It’s a place where no one ever grows older! Everything stays the same,” Jonghyun smiles. “And you live forever!”

He frowns, “Living forever isn’t fun.”

A while later they land in the same spot, and Jonghyun looks at him, “but then you get to do everything you want!”

“What happens after you do everything you want?”

Jonghyun closes his mouth, and far off the church bells rang in the distance, signaling midnight.

Ring ding dong, ring ding dong…

He turns around to the direction of the church, and back to the butterfly boy. “I have to… where did you go?” Looking up, he sees a golden butterfly spiraling up into the night sky, until it was seen no more.

The next morning Jonghyun wakes up in the hospital with frost bite, the doctor saying he had hit his head and fainted, possibly resulting in temporary hallucinations. For the next week, he listens to his mother scold him, and take away his gameboy. The golden butterfly was never seen again, and his mother simply told him he was just seeing things.

Jonghyun is now sixteen, and quite the teenager. He’s looked upon as a ladies’ man at school - he just considers himself lucky.

So when there’s a new student at school, the girls are either discussing how he looks. The guys are deciding on how they’re going to become friends with him, and Jonghyun is just waiting for him to arrive. The rest can come later.

When he enters the classroom, Jonghyun can tell he’s nervous by the way he glances everywhere. Their eyes meet for a second; he freezes. His light hazel eyes remind him of an unforgettable memory.

The teacher seats him next to him, and he’s constantly staring at him. He’s definitely nervous, and it’s like that Twilight scene, where Edward looks like a creeper pedophile constantly staring at Bella.

He finally decides to stop, two weeks later, when he realizes he knows nothing about him. When he thinks about it, Jonghyun realizes that he doesn’t even know his name.

He wants to slap himself at the irony. They’re finally placed together for a History project, and the atmosphere is utterly awkward.

“So, um,” he pauses, “sorry I don’t know already, but what’s your name?”

The bell rings, Jonghyun groans, but he answers quickly, picking up his backpack aa he walks away, cheesy smile on his face. “Jinki.”

“That’s a really weird name,” is the first thing he says the next day when Jinki sits in her seat next to him.

“I don’t know, a four year old named me based off of his rubber ducky.”

“That’s one deprived four year old,” he comments, ignoring the pang of nostalgia stabbing at him.

A month later, they’re pretty good friends.

“Can I tell you a secret?” Jonghyun asks, when they’re sitting on his backyard porch in dead winter.

“Go ahead.”

He frowns, kicking at the snow. “I saw a butterfly here, in the middle of winter.” He glances towards him - he’s stiff. Jonghyun finds it kind of amusing, and continues, “It was gold, and I was four years old back then.”

“That’s um, that’s… pretty cool.”

Jonghyun laughs, “Why are you stammering? Well, I chased it into the woods, and,” he can’t stop the smirk forming on his face, “I named it, actually. Want to know its name?”

Jinki looks horribly pale, and Jonghyun wants to slaps himself at why he didn’t realize this first day he walked into school. “S-sure.”

“I named it Jinki, based off a rubber ducky my mom accidently stepped on.” Jinki stays silent for a moment and, before Jonghyun asks, it seems like those dramatic scenes from those movies. “You’re like a butterfly, gentle and weak. Who are you?”

Jinki laughs, “I’m a butterfly - a golden butterfly.”

The smirk is wiped off his face, “I don’t get it - I don’t get any of it. It’s so…supernatural.”

Jinki nods, “Yeah, pretty much. You know a butterfly can grant wishes, right? A butterfly like me, I mean. Part human.”

Jonghyun blinks twice, “No, I didn’t. You found one? What did you wish for?”

Jinki laughs, “I wished for two things. Immortality, and I wanted to be as free as a butterfly. So, I turned into a butterfly. The immortality comes from reincarnation. You know what they say, right? Be careful what you wish for.”

“Do I get a wish?”

Jinki raises an eyebrow, “Well, yes. You do…”

He frowns, “What? You just got really sad.”

“I feel like you’re going to make a really stupid wish, and the world is going to blow up because of it.”

Jonghyun laughs, “Look, I may not be cool, or nice, or anything like that, but I’m a decent bad boy. How many wishes do I get?”

Jinki counts on her fingers; “You’ve only seen me as a butterfly at one meeting, so only one.”

“I wish…you were normal.”

Jonghyun looks over to see Jinki coughing over absolutely nothing, “W-what?”

“What’s wrong with my wish? When I was four, you didn’t like the idea of living forever. I don’t think that’s really changed. I don’t have anything to really wish for, anyways. Besides…” Jonghyun pauses, “nevermind. Hurry and grant my wish, genie.”

“I don’t really know what’ll happen when I do that, but okay.”

After closing his eyes for a second, a black butterfly comes out of his mouth and soars into the air, flying up the sky. There’s a silent moment where their eyes follow the path of the butterfly.

“That, was disgusting,” Jonghyun winces. “And was that it? I wanted a fireworks show, or something cool like that. Instead I got you throwing up a butterfly.”

“You’re a loser,” he smiles.

They both pause for a moment. “So now what?”

Jonghyun shrugs, “I’ll sing a congratulatory song on how you’re human again.”

“Oh joy,” he rolls his eyes in mock sarcasm. “Can you even sing?”

Jonghyun laughs, and opened his mouth singing. “I call you butterfly, as the days go by, the idea that I can’t escape you get’s driven in further.”

Jinki has a huge smile plastered on his face, and he tries to hide, but ends up failing when Jonghyun entwines their hands.
