“Did you hear about the new student?” Jongin whispers during class. “I heard he’s from China.”
“Isn’t that in like, South America?” Baekhyun asks.
Kyungsoo stares at them all like they’re going to jump him and murder him in four different ways. “I heard they brainwash children there to do calculus in their sleep.”
“There’s a thirty percent chance it’ll rain today,” Chanyeol suddenly says, and faces Wu Fan. “I’m getting a boner.”
Wu Fan stares at him. “Am I supposed to fix that or something?”
Lu Han isn’t that bad, actually, according to Kyungsoo, but anything that isn’t an eraser isn’t all that bad to him for the first five seconds.. Jongin considers him cool enough to join the Bad Bitches club, and signs them all up to sing for the Winter Ball.
“Hey,” Lu Han nudges Chanyeol’s back in the middle of class, “who’s that? He’s pretty cute.”
“Uh-uh,” Chanyeol says, “no can do. Off. Limits. That’s Sehun, but he’s totally off limits. He’s Jongin’s ex. You can’t date ex’s, it’s not allowed. It's against the rules of like, feminism or something.” He turns back around to face the board, leaving Lu Han to stare at his back, confused at this social injustice as their teachers hand out their tests.
"You're not even female."
“Good job,” their teacher says and hands Lu Han a perfect test paper. “I’m impressed with your work. See me after class, okay?”
Lu Han and Sehun are the only two kids left in the classroom when the bell rings, and their teacher clasps her hands together and looks at them both. “Sehun’s grades haven’t been as good as they were, and he’s recently asked me to find him a tutor. So I was wondering if it wouldn’t be too much if you could tutor Sehun, Lu Han?”
“Uh,” Lu Han says dully. “Sure.”
“You’re tutoring him?” Jongin shouts, when they’re all gathered at Zitao’s house. “You can’t do that! He’s my boyfriend!”
Kyungsoo and Lu Han exchange glances. “I thought you two broke up,” Lu Han says, which he later realizes isn’t helping his position. Zitao lets out another broken sob, and Baekhyun grabs the remote from him before he can throw it at the TV again.
“Well we’re back together!” Jongin shouts. “Don’t come near him!”
“Okay,” Lu Han shrugs. “I still have to tutor him though.”
“He just wanted to buy some peaches! Why’d he have to get hit by a bus! WHY,” Zitao shreiks, reaching for another tissue. Jongin tries not to think about the sudden feeling of foreshadowing.
“But your hair looks so sexy pushed back,” Jongin says, and runs a hand through Sehun’s hair. Sehun tries not to look like he has to run to the bathroom and empty his bowels, though he might actually have to do that, and tries to focus on other things in the classroom. The only person not looking at him is Kyungsoo, but Kyungsoo has a habit of being offended by every person, place, or thing. Especially erasers.
“Thanks,” Sehun replies, shrugging.
“Anytime,” Jongin grins and licks his lips, fingers dancing across Sehun’s shoulder. “So after class...”’
“I have tutoring.”
“I got the answer!” Sehun whisper-cheers, “I got the answer by myself for once!”
Lu Han looks over the paper and frowns. “Um, almost. Good try, though? Just. You got that part wrong, which led to that, that, and that being wrong.”
Sehun sighs.
“But hey!” Lu Han smiles, “It’s only precal. You’ll probably never see math again after this. What do you want to do in college anyway?”
“Computer engineering.”
“Oh.”
Jongdae comes in the next day to school with a new haircut, and it has everyone fawning. Including Jongin. Lu Han knows this because him and Sehun catch them making out where they usually meet up for tutoring sessions. “That’s unfortunate,” Lu Han says, though if he had an inner Lu Han, it’d be doing cartwheels and screaming.
“I guess,” Sehun sighs.
“That’s so fetch.”
“Oh my god, Kyungsoo.” Jongin rolls his eyes. “Stop trying to make fetch happen. It’s not going to happen.”
“Wow that was horrible,” Lu Han says to Baekhyun, after the Winterball performance. Kyungsoo tripped. “Why are we not hiding in a hole right now?”
“That was actually the best performance yet,” he replies. “And enjoy. Isn’t this your first high school dance? Must be crazy different from China.”
“We had dances in China,” Lu Han says, but Baekhyun isn’t listening to him. He waves to Chanyeol in the distance and grins.
“I’m going to see you later, okay?”
Lu Han nods dully and watches him walk away. He looks around to see what everyone else is doing; Jongdae and Minseok are laughing over something on the other side of the room, and Jongin is dancing with Sehun, or at least, he thinks they’re dancing, but it’s more as if Jongin is performing a mating ritual and Sehun is standing still, completely unamused. That must be painful.
His thoughts are interrupted by an upper classman, Kim Jonghyun, approaching him. “Hey,” he says, and winks. “You Japanese?”
“Chinese,” Lu Han says, and shifts awkwardly.
“I feel that,” Jonghyun replies, and waggles his eyebrows.
They get the Christmas candy grams during homeroom, and Minseok comes in a giant Santa Claus costume. Lu Han pretends not to know him.
“Who wants their candy grams?” Minseok asks with a huge grin. “What is this? One for Chanyeol! Here you go, Chanyeol.” He tosses one to Chanyeol, who laughs and opens his instantly. “One for Zitao! And, what, what is this? Four for you Wu Fan! You go, Wu Fan!”
Wu Fan just smirks, as if he knew he was going to receive the most and takes his candy grams.
Jongin looks expectant, and even sits up straight as he waits for his turn. “Hey,” he says, “what about-”
“And none for Kim Jongin bye.”
It turns out that Jongin has officially dumped Sehun for the second time.
“Oh,” Lu Han mutters. “I’m sorry to hear that. Plenty of fish in the sea and all that, right?”
“Sure,” Sehun shrugs. “I like you better anyway.”
“Wait, what-”
Sehun’s mouth tastes salty, but Lu Han’s okay with that and wonders if Sehun’s hand on his lower back is taking it too far for before the first date. But first he should probably figure out if he cares about that.
