This week's OoS drabbles
Challenge is Fathers, in spirit of yesterday's Hallmark-created celebration. (I kid; I love my dad.)
And here are my three:
Buffy, sometime in the earlier seasons:
Buffy sits alone at her Dad’s house. It’s typical. She came all this way to see him for his birthday, no less, because her mom said she couldn’t miss it. And then the second she’s settled in, he gets called off for work. Important meetings, all weekend. Can’t miss them, even for his daughter’s brief visit.
She hears movement before she looks up questioningly at her father. Before she can ask if he forgot something, he clears his throat and says, “I cancelled. I was hoping I could take you out for the day instead.”
She grins and hugs him.
Gunn, anytime:
Gunn has very few memories of his father before he died, and he doesn’t dwell on those memories very often. But he always instinctively dreams about him around Father’s Day.
He used to dream about walking up to his Dad holding Alonna when she was just a baby. His father would look up and happily say, “Come, look at her. She’s laughing.”
Now in the dreams his father looks up with cold, hard eyes and accuses, “You let her die!”
An older, harder Gunn rolls over in his bed and wills himself to forget he ever had a blood family.
Giles, future:
Throughout his years in Sunnydale, Giles had taken his role as father figure for the group with pride. Having no family of his own, it was enough for him to care for them as he would if they were really his children.
But now they were older and spread throughout the world. They didn’t have as much time to indulge him, and it was only now that he truly began to regret never actually making his own family. He doubted family members bound to him by blood would have been too busy leading their own lives to remember his birthday.
This new "tags" thing. Hmmm, I like the idea of it in theory, but I don't know how much I'll actually use it. I think I'd prefer if they didn't actually show up on the post. Oh well.
Oh, and I finally have a job for the summer. *dances*
