We're not the platonic sort, Jane.

My first fanmix! I'm currently working through an Austen/Brontë addiction and wanted to do something for my favourite portrayal of Jane Eyre/Edward Rochester! BBC's 2006 miniseries had a gorgeous score, but unfortunately no soundtrack was ever released. :-(

The mix focuses primarily on Rochester's POV. With 16 songs, the mix is relatively short with mostly instrumental music. It also includes songs from Vienna Teng, Damien Rice, Katie Melua, A Fine Frenzy and Placebo. I was going for mellow but deep with subtext. I really liked that this adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was intentionally filmed to be more provocative and "sexually charged" than your usual Austen romance (i.e. there is kissing and relative amounts of physical contact long before the last 20 minutes of the series). Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens delivered superb performances and you just can't beat real English accents in an English romance! I am also absolutely convinced that the 2011 Jane Eyre movie only cast Michael Fassbender to try to replicate Toby Stephen's portrayal of Rochester. But that's my bias showing. :p

There's lots of graphics and details under the cut. Potentially spoilery, so you have been warned!

We're not the platonic sort | fanmix for BBC's Jane Eyre miniseries (2006)
--------

Leaving Forever, Anne Dudley || instrumental

"He has painful thoughts, no doubt, to harass him, and make his spirits unequal." - Charlotte Brontë
We are first introduced to Edward Rochester, a rough and hardened traveller of the world. Jane is told he is often away from Thornfield for long periods of time because of the terrible memories it holds for him.

Can you see Jane? Patrick Doyle || instrumental

"I knew you'd do me good, the first time I met you."
Jane's past and unique character fascinates Rochester unlike any person he's ever met, and soon a friendship is formed.

Passacaglia, Bear McCreary || instrumental

"It would please me now to draw you out -- to learn more of you."
Rochester can't help but find enjoyment with this rare new specimen. He teases and flirts with her every day, sometimes playing with her emotions a little too strongly. It's not until she has to leave him to visit her ailing aunt that he realizes he's grown more than just a little fond of her company (and her, his).

Recessional, Vienna Teng

"It's so beautiful here," she says,
"This moment now and this moment, now."
And I never thought I would find her here:
Flannel and satin, my four walls transformed.
But she's looking at me, straight to center,
No room at all for any other thought.
And I know I don't want this, oh, I swear I don't want this.
There's a reason not to want this but I forgot.

9 Crimes, Damien Rice

It's the wrong time
For somebody new
It's a small crime
And I got no excuse
Leave me out with the waste
This is not what I do
It's the wrong kind of place
To be thinking of you
Expectations are running high for Rochester to marry the beautiful and wealthy Blanche Ingrim. Even Jane has begun planning for a future job placement after the wedding. No one knows his heart's true desire.

I Know You Are But What Am I? Mogwai || instrumental

"When we are parted, when you leave me, I believe that bond will snap and I will bleed inwardly."
The inevitable separation that must happen when Rochester takes a wife becomes too much for Jane. She spills her heart out to him, the tension between them finally climaxing to a point of no return, and forces Rochester to choose between the expectations of society and that of his own heart.

You are mine, Mute Math

"God forgive me and let no man meddle with me! I aim to keep her."
Everyone has their obsession
Consuming thoughts, consuming time
They hold high their prized possession
That defines the meaning of their lives

The Heart Asks Pleasure First, Michael Nyman || instrumental

The die is cast. Rochester tries to be happy about their engagement and rushes it along as much as Jane allows, but on their wedding day he can't shake the feeling of impending doom.

I'd love to kill you, Katie Melua

"Ladies and gentleman, may I introduce you to my wife."
I love to watch you in your sleep
Cause you don't have power over me
And when you're awake I'm undone
Under your spell - in hell

Sleeping with Ghosts, Placebo

"This girl who stands so quiet and grave at the mouth of hell. This girl who is all quietness and sanity and innocence. You wondered why I wanted her? Why I risked the wrath of God to get her?"
This one world vision
Turns us into compromise
What good's religion
When it's each other we despise/
Hush
It's okay
Dry your eye
Soulmate dry your eye

Almost Lover, A Fine Frenzy

Your fingertips across my skin
The palm trees swaying in the wind, images
You sang me Spanish lullabies
The sweetest sadness in your eyes, clever trick/
Goodbye, my almost lover
Goodbye, my hopeless dream
I'm trying not to think about you
Can't you just let me be?
After his terrible secret is revealed, Rochester knows Jane will leave him. He tries to tempt her to run away with him to a small Mediterranean villa, promising he'd never bring her into a life of sin. But in their hearts, they both know its not a promise that can be kept.

Long Destiny, Hajime Mizoguchi || instrumental

So Jane runs away from Thornfield, leaving Rochester to a life without love, hope or redemption.

Memories (Someone We'll Never Know), Clint Mansell || instrumental

"Say you don't love me. I dare you. You cannot."
"I will not. I will love you to the day I die."
Jane successfully begins her new life as Jane Elliott, but the past still holds a stubborn grip on her heart.

One year later, Bear McCreary || instrumental

In a moment of pure anguish and desperation, Rochester cries out Jane's name in a storm. Even though a great distance now separates them, she hears his cry and knows instantly that she must return home.

Redemption, Normand Corbeil || instrumental

"It is Jane."
"It is me, sir. I've come back."
"You are real? I dreamed of you often and then hoping you'd come."
Scarred, injured, and with most of his vision lost to the Thornfield fire, Rochester can hardly believe his remaining senses that Jane is alive and reunited with him.

I'll Be Yours, Placebo

"Jane, I want a wife. I want a wife. Not a nursemaid to look after me. I want a wife to share my bed everynight. All day, if we wish. {smiles} If I can't have that, I'd rather die. We're not the platonic sort, Jane."
"Can you see me? Then hear this, Edward. Your life is not yours to give out. It is mine. All mine, and I forbid it."
