Latest count: 17 separate fires. At least.
More keep popping up every hour. I can't even keep track of the names anymore.
My aunt and uncle own a cabin in Running Springs (near Big Bear, close to the Grass Valley/Lake Arrowhead fire) which is now under mandatory evacuation. It's more of a vacation home, luckily, so there's no one up there, but they have to be nervous. Especially since they're on a cruise right now and can do absolutely nothing except watch and wait for news from somewhere in Mexico.
And now we can see the smoke from here, stretching well across the mountain range to the south. I'm going to try to get a picture during my walk this afternoon, which I'm taking early (and much more slowly) seeing as how I can't sit down for longer than ten minutes at a time without suffering from excruciating pain when I try to stand up again.
(Well, I was in excruciating pain. I just realized that I've taken about 1,000 mg's of Ibuprofen since 2am last night. Probably, this is bad.)
I'm expecting to see flames tonight, considering the plumes. October usually IS bad, fire-wise, but this is just crazy, absolutely nuts. I've never seen anything like it.
Earlier this morning I was watching local fire coverage (like everyone else in the state) and right in the middle of a report about the dozens of homes in Lake Arrowhead that were bursting into flame, a little box popped up on the screen to deliver a flash flood warning.
Only in California, man.
And really, we should BE so lucky.
