The set was prepared, and everyone was getting ready. Really it was the perfect plan. A way to present the Colonials to people throughout the world, and really there was only one thing to do to have it down perfectly. The knowledge that President Roslin was formally a school teacher, and the Secretary for Education, definitely helped the decision.
“Miss Cregg?”
CJ turned on her heel and smiled as she found the Admiral of the Colonial Fleet joining her. “Admiral Adama, what can I do for you Sir?”
“Is all this really necessary?” He asked motioning around the set they were standing on.
“Our aim here is to present a good image of the Colonials,” CJ explained, although she’d already been through this a number of times with President Roslin’s Aide. “This may seem a little odd to you, but I don’t think I could completely explain what it is that makes this perfect. Why everyone accepts them… I suppose, really Admiral, you’ll just have to trust me.”
Bill paused, raising an eyebrow. “Does that work for your superiors?”
“Not really, no.” CJ shrugged and smiled before she headed over to talk to one of the camera men.
Standing awkwardly for a moment Bill glanced around at the set before heading towards the dressing rooms. It didn’t take him long to find Laura, if the marine guard hadn’t given away her location her laugh did. He nodded to the guards at the door and walked into the room, only to find Laura getting her hair done while she talked to a pup… no, a Muppet. It was an odd word, but he had been briefed on what they were and how to treat them.
“I play the guitar too,” The little Muppet was telling her proudly. He wasn’t really sure if it was green or blue, but its accent intrigued him. “My Pappi taught me when I was younger.”
“I would love to hear you play Rosita,” Laura told her, treating her like a real child as everyone else seemed to do. “You know, my father taught me to play the piano when I was your age.”
“Really?” Rosita threw up her hands. “Then we should play together on the show, if you’d like Madame President?”
“But I haven’t learned any music here,” Laura pointed out. She noticed Bill in the mirror and smiled. “What if your music is different to ours?”
Rosita laid a hand on Laura’s shoulder and leaned closer to her. “It’s okay, you can just start playing and I’ll add whatever fits.”
“Improvised music,” Laura smiled. “I would definitely love to do that with you then.”
“I shall go get my guitar,” Rosita told her with excitement, and hurried out of the room.
As the make up was packed away, Laura spun around in her chair to face Bill. “I was wondering when you were going to show up.” She smiled brightly.
“I leave you alone for two days and you’re doing children’s television?” He leaned against the doorframe and crossed his arms.
“CJ thought it would be a good idea,” Laura shrugged as she stood up and grabbed her jacket. “I’m starting to think it is too.”
Bill hesitated for a moment as he took in the outfit she was wearing. It wasn’t that he hadn’t seen her in anything but a suit before, but he hadn’t even known she still had her red skirt and jacket. He’d just assumed it had been left behind on New Caprica. “You’re looking a little laid back for the President of the Twelve Colonies,” He moved closer to her.
“It’s a children’s show Bill,” Laura pointed out. “I’d like to be comfortable. Rosita likes the skirt.”
“I can’t believe you’re treating her as though she’s real,” Bill rolled his eyes.
“It’s called fun Bill,” Laura smiled as she moved towards him. “You should try it out some time.”
“Are you suggesting we’ve never had fun?” He asked quietly as he pulled her closer to him.
“I’m saying…” She slid her arms up around his neck and raised her eyebrows. “Our new little grandson is going to be watching these shows as he grows up, so we should play along.”
“I still don’t think playing with Muppets is going to boost our popularity with these people,” Bill sighed, resting his forehead against hers.
“But it’s what I think that really matters in this relationship,” Laura giggled. “So either play nice, or sleep on the sofa.” She whispered.
“I don’t know…” Bill pulled back and pretended to seriously consider it. “The sofa is pretty comfortable.”
“Oh Gods…” Bursting into a fit of giggles, Laura playfully slapped arm. It took her a moment to settle down and as she looked into his eyes she smiled brightly. “Two days is too long Admiral.”
“It’s not as easy for us to stay together down here Madame President,” He told her, brushing his fingers through her hair. “The military is called to one country while the government is called to another. We’re going to have to put up with it until it dies down.”
Laura was about to say more when she noticed something in the doorway behind Bill. “I think we have company,” She said quietly and motioned for him to look.
Peeking around both sides of the doorway were two little Muppets, watching them closely - or rather, looking like they were watching them closely. “I didn’t want to interrupt,” The little orange coloured one exclaimed loudly. “Rosie said you had a really pretty skirt and that I should see it.”
“You’re welcome to come in,” Laura offered as she moved away from Bill.
The two Muppets seem excited by the news and were quick to join the Colonial Leaders. “My name is Zoe,” She told them and twirled slightly in her little pink tutu. “And this is my bestest friend in the whole world, Elmo.”
“Hello Mrs President Ma’am,” Elmo greeted her.
“It’s very nice to meet you both,” Laura told them, glancing at Bill with a smile. “I’ve heard a lot about you from Miss Cregg and your friend Rosita.”
“Miss CJ is very nice,” Zoe declared. “She let us meet the President of America!”
“Elmo got an injection from Mrs First Doctor Abbey,” The little red Muppet told them, holding out his arm as if to show Laura. “It’s all better now though.”
“Were you sick Elmo?” Laura asked seriously.
“Elmo wasn’t sick,” He told her, shaking his head quickly. “Elmo had to get a big needle so he wouldn’t get sick later.”
“Yeah and I had to get one too,” Zoe sighed dramatically. “But that was okay because I went to my dance class after and forgot all about it.”
“Madame Pres…” CJ paused as she stood in the doorway and saw the two Muppets in the room. “There you too are. Gina’s looking for you because you’re supposed to be taking a stray cat to the clinic.” She told Zoe and Elmo.
“Oh Elmo we forgot!” Zoe cried out. “And I wanted to see the new animals Gina was looking after, come on.”
“Goodbye Mrs President Laura Lady,” Elmo called out over his shoulder as he rushed after his friend.
“They were quite…” Bill paused as he searched for the right word. “Hyperactive.”
“They’re all very excited to meet you,” CJ explained with a smile. “The younger Muppets have been referring to you as ‘Space People’ as a lot of children are doing it seems. That’s one thing we’re hoping to work on in this episode so you don’t sound like you’ve stepped out of a bad sci-fi movie.”
“And we wouldn’t want that,” Laura glanced at Bill with a smile. “Come and watch, I promise you’ll like it.”
“What’s in it for me?” Bill asked slowly, raising an eyebrow.
“I’m going to make a complete fool of myself pretending to be a Viper,” Laura told him, pouting a little as she spoke.
“Pretending to be a Viper?”
“A Viper,” She smirked and held her arms out, making noises as if she was flying. Closing in on him she stopped only when he pressed a kiss against her nose.
“You make a terrible Viper,” He told her in all seriousness.
“But it entertains the children even if I crash and burn,” Laura told him quietly before taking his hand in her own. “All right CJ, lead the way.” She declared.
“Madame President, Admiral Adama,” CJ waved them through the door with a smile. She’d known the Colonial Leaders long enough now to witness little moments such as the one she’d just watched. If anything they were the cutest power couple she’d ever met. “This way…”
And so the day began.
