I need to find a Clara and the Doctor icon. Just sayin'.
Due to a problem with my cable providers electronic guide last night, I didn't get to watch this live. Woe. So I watched it online over breakfast instead :-D This may need to be a new tradition - DW rewatch over Sunday breakfast. Heh.
Thusly, this is my brief immediate reaction spoiler-filled post written three minutes after the episode finished.
SQUEEEEEEEEEE!
Ahem.
This was so much fun. Seriously. So. Much. Fun.
I was cheering and talking to the screen and it's been at least a year since I did that to an episode of Doctor Who. Absolutely loved this. The monster in the wifi was far more effective than I expected and Celia Imrie was a fabulous villain. It didn't occur to me until I saw Richard E. Grant that the Great Intelligence was behind it all. Yes, I'm dense. I should have worked that out :-D
But I was having too much fun with it all to attempt to think ahead.
I've loved the relationship between Clara and the Doctor in each of her incarnations and I continue to love it. She's wonderful, wanting to do things and see things but not letting the Doctor just whisk her away before she's made sure the people who are important to her are OK. I get the feeling that she won't be letting the Doctor get away with much and it's going to be such fun to have a companion who really challenges him again.
As for the flirtation? I'm surprisingly loving this. Given that I got very irritated with it during Rose's time in the TARDIS and I was none too happy with Martha and then Amy's infatuations with him, I'm not at all opposed to whatever is going on with Clara. And I think that's because I don't see her just doing whatever he says, she's challenging him and making him uncertain and puncturing his bubble of "I know what I'm doing best" and I really do love that.
Basically, I think that I'm fangirling Clara in a way that I haven't fangirled a companion since Donna. And I think she's a terrific balance to Eleven.
The sheer joy when he discovered her again was great and I'm so excited to find out why he keeps finding her. Who is she? What in heck is Moffat doing to all of us this time?
And what is the Great Intelligence up to?
Loved that little sight of UNIT at the end, nice to see them still around and doing their thing. Heck, the entire episode was filled with lovely little shout outs to DW mythology and history. The new opening credits are gorgeous and that little hint of Matt Smith's face is a total call-back to the original series opening credits. The new TARDIS interior with the Gallifreyan symbols on the console rotator. So many lovely little touches for the old school fans to be happy with, I'm loving this.
All the London imagery was wonderful as well. Loved how well they used the backgrounds and landmarks to show without telling us where they were. After all the American imagery of the last couple of seasons, it's nice to see everything solidly back in England. I even loved the image of the Doctor camped out in Clara's front garden, that was just lovely. And then creepy when all the lights started going on and it was a street just liked I grew up on and OH GOD WHAT IF THAT REALLY HAPPENED?
I'm sure that people will already be dissecting and finding all the plot holes and issues, but for the record: I freaking loved this and I'm so excited about whatever is happening next.
SQUEEEEE!
