return of an old icon :)

Look, you may know him as Malcolm Tucker, but I still haven't watched In the Thick of It and thus I primarily think of him as Frobisher from Torchwood: Children of Earth. In which he was so stunning, outstanding and moving that I refuse to believe this wasn't the role that got him his third gig in the Whoverse. (The first one being a Roman in Fires ( Read more... )

Obligatory bigger picture remark: yes, it still sucks they didn't cast a poc and/or woman for a change. But: not only is Peter Capaldi a superb actor, but he's NOT A YOUNG MAN, and I'm really really glad we're taking a break from the youngsters now. Bring back the middle-aged looking Doctors, I say.

My thoughts pretty much exactly. :)

I must admit my inner Children of Earth fan is extremely pleased. :) Also: Jack's face, the first time he meets Twelve. Angst or ANGST?

Try In the Loop, it's a much more self-contained version of The Thick of It, and is hysterically funny. I think Capaldi's a great choice, I'm just sad about the continuing suckiness of changing the Doctor's race or gender being considered too risky to ever try. Here's hoping that at the very least Moffat will commit to having an upcoming episode or two written or directed by a woman.

I do wish Catherine Tregenna would return to the (tv) franchise, I loved her episodes in the Rusty years. Helen Raynor had the malfortune of seeing her first two eps hated by the fandom, but her second two parter was fairly popular, and in addition to her as a writer, she not only worked as a DW script editor overall but as Stephen Moffat's script editor during the RTD era in particular, so one would hope she'd be available.

I'm hoping that by the time we're ready for 13 Wonderland has been cancelled and Naveen Andrews is free.:) Now there's only the wait to see what flavor of ridiculous 12's fashion sense is.

(I still have my fingers crossed for a Tilda Swinton!Master, though.)

Whom does Naveen Andrews play in Wonderland, as a matter of curiosity?

Jafar. What Jafar's doing in Wonderland is really the question. Maybe the Queen of Hearts had an opening for an Evil Vizier.

Being a non-native to Wonderland herself,I'm sure Cora would appreciate drafted talent. :)

Mmmm...I suppose the people wearily predicting another "young quirky white dude" weren't entirely correct? That feels like reaching, though. (Disappointment aside, I wholeheartedly agree about Capaldi's performance in Torchwood.)

Frankly, at this point I think we're due for a change of showrunner as well as lead actor. Moffat has already been in charge nearly as long as RTD *and* wrote episodes through RTD's whole run. That comment about a female Doctor being like a man playing the Queen doesn't help.

Re: change of showrunner, I wrote an entire post about this back when Smith's departure was announced, which is to say I agree.
