I join the majority in declaring Chibnall himself has been replaced by an alien/clone/is living through his very own Flowers for Algernon/whatever. This was one adorable episode.
First of all: awwwwwwwww, Kate Stewart. It might be fanservicy as hell to give the late Brig a competent in-charge-of-UNIT-science daughter, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing, and of course the Doctor is pleased as punch. Even more so since she didn't flaunt the connection but earned his respect before he figured it out. Now I hope for all the Dad Alistair and daughter Kate fiction in the world.
Secondly, Eleven and the Ponds are great. Also this season is really selling me in a way the last one utterly failed to on Amy as the Doctor's current best friend. That conversation he has with her sitting by the river was wonderful. (And confirmed fanon that he imprints on whoever is around/his companion when he regenerates.) I think what makes me exceedingly happy about both Ponds and the Doctor this season is that everyone's investments into everyone else feels balanced. Hooray for this Team TARDIS!
Thirdly, whoever speculated last week that events for the Doctor happen in a different order than for the Ponds is clearly on to something. The Doctor mentioned Rory having left his whatever in Henry VIII's apartments in 4.02, but Amy and Rory only have this adventure now in 4.04. Add to this the Doctor telling Amy he knows they'll leave/fade fróm his life for good, and I don't think he was speaking in a general Time Lord way. My guess is he already experienced what he knows is the final goodbye to Amy and Rory, and has done before all of his meetings with them in s7.
The wrap up with the Cubes and the Galleyfreyan boogiemonsters felt a bit perfunctionary, but it was never the point of the episode anyway.
In conclusion: awwwwww!
