Re: McKellen/Stewart - Wow! I'll admit I didn't expect to see that! They need to find a movie where they can play lovers and I would definitely watch it over and over.

They already played lovers - that's what the X-Men franchise is all about! That would be smashing. The sole reason why I didn't try everything to watch them Waiting for Godot together is that Beckett isn't my cup of tea, alas.

Apropos Becket, the interviews they gave to promote that one is why I'm not surprised by that photo at all. I mean, here's a bit from a Time Magazine article:

'The first time I saw Ian, he was playing Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing," Stewart remembers. 'Good lord," says McKellen - that was in 1965, and he was a relatively small fry in the stellar Franco Zeffirelli production.
"I was instantly envious of his extraordinary good looks, not to say beauty," says Stewart. "He had a glamour about him."
McKellen: "You sure it wasn't Derek Jacobi?"

Oh my God stop them no don't. But seriously, do you think there's a fan service element to this, or are they naturally flirtatious people? I mean, they're both obviously goofballs even when not together, but I don't know.

You know me: I think both is true. They're natural flirts, and they're aware it's wildly popular with their fans. Case in point, Ian McKellen's latest tweet, here. He didn't just share that out of the goodness of his heart.

Whatever the merits of the X-Men franchise it has done the world a great service in giving us the glorious Sir Ian/Sir Patrick friendship.

I have to admit, though I'm not super pumped for Mr. Holmes (both because it has no Watson and because I wasn't thrilled with the original novel), I like McKellan and Morahan enough that I do want to see it.

I haven't read the novel - please don't spoil me - though noticed the lack of Watson with dissaproval in the trailer. Otoh: Ian McKellen. Hence I will be watching.

Yes, it's set post WWII, and I can't remember what Watson's status was, except that he wasn't in the novel at all. Ian McKellan and Hattie Morahan are big draws, agreed. :)

I was a bit annoyed at the standard "the deerstalker and pipe were silly, and only silly Sherlock Holmes fans like them" bit in the trailer as well. Seriously - why do films and writers feel the need to display contempt for the fans that will support their projects?
