The guy was from that episode dealing with the P vs NP math problem.
KITTY. I should probably scoff at the mom/dad gender binary thing, and I did when Sherlock started comparing fatherhood with sensibility and motherhood with sensitivity, but Kitty and her parents Sherlock and Joan is an amusing concept to me that I enjoy -- not literally, but this edgy sparkplug with these two as support figures.
Also Kitty tripping over herself running from the room to go out and buy food during Sherlock and the mathematician's emotional confrontation. I LOVE HER.

Ha, yes. And good for Kitty not to want to be a witness when Not!Dad and Harlan go at it. :) Both the time jump and Kitty really refreshed the show and seem to have gotten over the s2 glitches while preserving what makes the series so enjoyable.
I know they were interested in exploring the Holmes-doesn't-do-friendships idea again but it did feel like an odd choice to me to invest so heavily in Harlan, a character who had showed up only once and made very little impression, when they could have explored how other recurring characters whom we do care about (Alfredo, Ms. Watson, poor disappeared Randy) reacted to Holmes' disappearance and what that says about those relationships.
Apparently many viewers interpreted the last scene as meaning that Joan is herself a rape survivor, which honestly hadn't occurred to me; do you have any thoughts?
Yeah, basing it around Harlan was weird, I kept swaying between its interesting to get to look so deeply into a character you knew so slightly and ...that's a lot of feelings for your second scene ever, buddy. I don't think we've met yet.
(OH GOD RANDY IS SO IMPORTANT I need them to bring him back. If anybody really needs to confront Sherlock about not giving him enough, it's Randy.)
I am shocked, shocked, that you didn't think of that possibility yourself. I mean, they did have the angsty breakup and reunion arc last season, which is catnip for shippers...
