Shakespearean Tales

Jun 15, 2014 19:37

Watching the Tennant Richard II and rewatching some Hollow Crown stuff put me in the mood for Shakespearean Histories fanfiction. Chances are all the stories listed below are already known to anyone interested, but just in case they aren't, or you'd like to do some rereading:

Sparks of Better Hope (1721 words) by skazka
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Hollow Crown (2012), Henry IV Part 1 - Shakespeare
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Prince Hal/Falstaff, Prince Hal/Ned Poins/Falstaff, Prince Hal/Ned Poins
Characters: Prince Hal (Shakespeare), Sir John Falstaff, Edward "Ned" Poins
Additional Tags: Gross Snuggling, Sharing a Bed, Sickfic, Yuletide Treat, Ill-Fated Trios
Summary:
Too late for Christmas, too early for the new year. (Or, Hal makes himself inconvenient in as many ways as possible.)

I loathe Ned Poins. My feelings for Hal are somewhat ambiguos as well and depend on the production - that gif of Henry slapping him from The Hollow Crown was wish fulfillment of many a year - but even in productions where I dislike him, I think Hal's the interesting kind of screwed up. However, Poins? Sycophantic fratboy extraordinaire of the type that makes Gratiano in Merchant of Venice so dislikeable to me as well. And yet, and yet, the above story, perhaps by virtue of putting Falstaff between them, made me feel for all three characters. The story below, on the other hand, fulfills my desire of seeing someone write the pov of poor Francis the bullied waiter from Henry IV, part 1 (the one whom Hal and Points torment while waiting for Falstaff to return). Seriously, the Francis scene is about as funny as Gratiano having a go at Shylock post trial and the lack of antisemitism in it doesn't make it less sadistic. Ugh. So it's good to read a fanfic acknowledging that.
