I don't know what to write in this thing anymore. My life is not exciting.
I finished the latest book I was reading, "The Immortal Class: Bike Messengers and the Cult of Human Power", which was actually pretty nice after a while. At first Trav the author was doing waaay too much chest pounding about his own riding, and I do question some of the stats he lists as far as mph in some places, but overall he did a great job of describing the feel of riding a bike in the deep inner city...rapidly, all the time. Towards the end he ramped up the bike-tivism, and managed to keep it just reeled in enough that it didn't go over the top. He made sure to mention all his buddies, but he did it in so much a cooler way than the last few books I have read which all just seemed to be last minute name-checks before the authors died. Did it make me want to be a messenger? Nah. I'm not sucked into the romanticization the whole thing. Just riding is fine with me. But it did help me understand the courier business a lot more than I previously had. A good portion of the book is written in the slang that happens between the dispatcher and the cyclists over the radios they carry, which is difficult to understand at first, but at one point sort of comes together and you start to dig it. A glossary of terms couldn't have hurt though. I'm glad I read it.
Now I am reading....wait for it...a textbook on databases. Can you feel the excitement? I can't.
