dry

I'm looking into getting a fruit dehydrator. So far I haven't quite figured out how it works. I imagine it heats up, but isn't that just an oven? Maybe there is some kind of convection thing going on that removes vapor or something.
A lot of the models I have looked at so far seem to double duty as a jerky maker. I dunno about that...I am wondering if the plastic would become embedded with some jerky smell that would never quite go away, and then pass it on to your frootslices.
Can you dehydrate ALL fruits, or are there some that just don't deal with the process very well?
I'm hoping to design my own trail mix if I can get the fruit drying thing down pat. It'll be some expensive freakin trail mix though, because it'll have macadamia nuts in it. Macadamias ae my -thing- right now. Heres some advice if you are gonna get some. Go with the real deal Mauna Loa brand. They are more expensive but they are worth it. I've tried the Publix brand, and the Kroger brand, and they just aren't the same.
