Paperwork

“You have got to be kidding me.”

It was the first thing that came into his mind and out of his mouth the moment he had seen that stack of papers in her arms. There was just no way, no freaking way, he would agree to such a thing as copying and signing papers and bookkeeping. Not in this lifetime. Not ever. He was an Exorcist, for the love of God. He wasn’t ‘trained’ to do those kinds of stuff. But of course, much to his disbelief and dismay, a part of him was actually trying to argue against him, telling him to just offer a helping hand.

“Shouldn’t this be Komui’s work?” he pointed out flatly. There. That should do it.

A weary sigh left her as she carefully shifted the stack in her arms against her, shaking a numb hand. “It should be and he had been putting it off for a few days now. Until he realized earlier this afternoon that the report is due tomorrow at nine.”

That’s Komui for you, he wanted to remark but bit his tongue back. He eyed the paperwork again. “So that’s why you’re asking for my help.”

“Yes!” Lenalee replied cheerily. “We really need all the help we can get if we want to finish it on time.”

Kanda shook his head and shrugged his shoulders, averting his eyes at anywhere but her pleading smile. It was probably the most powerful of all her abilities, even more powerful than that of the Dark Boots. And he was pretty much betting everything that she would be the death of him someday.

“Sorry. You’ll have to find someone else. I just came back from a mission.”

“Is that so?” Again, another sigh and her smile faded slightly. She bit her lower lip and glanced at an empty corner, her expression a mixture of distress and dejection. He wanted to retort at her to just leave already, not wanting to see that expression any longer in case his self suddenly decided to give in.

After a moment, she smiled back at him. “Well, sorry for the bother then. I’ll see you later.”

He closed the door and let out a relieved sigh, rather pleased that he held up well against her, despite his voice of reason still waging a war with him. That was really, really close; she almost pushed him over the brink with that last look on her face. Although he was surprised that she wasn’t pushy like before. He wondered what the reason was…

---

Somewhere in the Order…

“You told me it would work, Lavi!”

“It didn’t?”

“No. He just stood there and stared at me and flat-out refused to help.”

“Did you do exactly what I said? Like the sigh and the smile and all that? And it still didn’t affect him?”

“Yes. I told you it was hopeless. We should've just started already, instead of recruiting Kanda to help.” An exasperated sigh. “Why did you ask me to do that anyway?”

A momentary pause then an amused chuckle. “Just an experiment.”
