Star Driver review

i just spent the last 3 nights watching a little known anime and wanted to talk about it somewhere. it's a 2011 one-season show, very CLAMP like in style, even the mecha look more like Code Geass designs. the story's your basic alien tech that a secret society want to take over the world and a few high schoolers are fighting to stop them. on the surface, it's a decent mecha show with very little backstory or explanation to anything - couple of stories told within that are reworking of the mythos - but it kept me hooked. the fighting starts in the first epi, there's very little training involved. the main fighter, "Galactic Pretty Boy"(that's how he's referred to in the show) Takuto comes across as having plot armor but not being OP. He pulls new moves moves out when they're needed without the long training periods or last chance power boost, it's always 'well that didn't work so i'll try this'. you don't notice it's a new move until after he's used it. or at least i didn't. ^-^

the oddest thing though is it's set up as a love triangle that doesn't play out: Wako fantasizes about the guys getting together multiple times, she claims to love them both but the other girls in the show show more emotion towards them than she does, Sugata and Takuto each wonder on separate occasions if they could stay in the other's life if they married Wako, to Wako. she only kisses one of them and that's in the school play. it's got possibilities for the yaoi fangirls, not the level of obsession/devotion most ships have but it's obvious there's more than friendship at least.

definitely a title i want a physical copy of. 8 out of 10.
