Summary: Maki and Yamapi go on a date. Things don't necessarily go as planned.
Maki looked at herself in the mirror one last time before leaving her apartment. She was going out on a date! She could hardly believe it, actually. Being the shy person that she was, she'd only been on a handful of dates while living in Japan. Since moving to Korea, she hadn't gone on any; she wasn't totally comfortable with her lack of language skills. But tonight would be different. She didn't know what made her boss do it, but he gave a certain Yamashita-san her phone number, and before she knew it, he had called her to ask her out. It was a chance meeting when he first walked into the restaurant where she worked, but they'd gotten to know each other better after his frequent visits to the restaurant, and Maki found herself very attracted to him. He was smart, handsome, sweet, and seemed to really understand her. She took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Tonight, she was determined to have fun.
Like Maki, it had been a very long time since Tomohisa had gone on a date. Only, for him at least, it had been nearly ten years. The last had been that disastrous fifteenth birthday party, where his life had changed forever. Ever since that day, he'd shied away from any kind of human contact. He'd even become a sort of hikikomori; someone who avoided any kind of society interaction. Whereas most hikikomori avoided it for purely selfish reasons, Tomohisa was afraid of his power surfacing again before he could get it under control. The only time he would venture out of his small apartment was to take exams at school, which he'd arranged with the school so he could take them late at night when no one else was around.
But eventually, the government caught up with him. Shortly after his graduation, he'd obtained his first teaching job. While there, the government officials had sent a team to take him in. It was then he knew that he couldn't live in Japan anymore. Leaving, he gathered what little possessions he still had, and left for Korea.
Straightening his clothing, he waited for her outside her apartment, hoping he didn't blunder things too much.
Her hands were shaking a little as she pressed the button for the elevator, and in her distracted state, she didn't notice as her hand phased through the panel, into the electronics behind the wall. She heard the tell-tale crackling before she quickly withdrew her hand, looking around to see if anyone had noticed; thankfully there was no one. "Maki...get a hold of yourself...it's just a date...you need to concentrate so you don't blow your cover...." With the elevator now broken, she found herself relegated to the stairs. All 12 flights of them. Great. Just great.
She was catching her breath when she emerged from her building, and spotted him immediately. With his reddish hair, and stylish clothing, she wondered how it was that he'd never been scouted to be a model. And how was it that someone as meek as her was in the modeling business? She shelved those questions for another day as she ran to meet him.
"Sorry! The elevator broke, and I had to take the stairs. I hope you didn't have to wait long." She smiled brightly at him, trying to forget the whole elevator incident.
"Oh not at all! I just got here," he lied smoothly. He didn't want her to feel bad about him waiting, and he didn't mind at all anyway. it gave him the chance to look around, get to know his surroundings. Ever since coming to Korea, Tomohisa hadn't really had much chance to look around and actually see where he was living. "I hope you weren't stuck in the elevator or anything. That could get pretty scary!"
While being stuck in an elevator would be harrowing for an ordinary person, it wouldn't have been too big a deal for Maki as long as she was the only one in the elevator; but she didn't really mention that to him. "Oh gosh...no, no...nothing that serious, thankfully." Nope, just frying the elevator's electrical system, Maki thought to herself wryly. "I don't do well in enclosed spaces, so I'm glad that didn't happen either." Well, at least that was the truth.
She wasn't sure what it was, but Maki found herself spending a lot of time looking at his face. In other words, staring at him. When she realized what she was doing, she felt her cheeks heat up as she turned her eyes to the ground. "Um...so...where are we going, Yamashita-san?"
Blink. Placing his hand to his face, Tomohisa wondered if there was something wrong with it. "Oh! I thought maybe dinner and movie. How does that sound?" It sounded lame, even to his own ears, but he'd wait to see what she thought of the idea. She was probably more experienced at these things then he was anyway. After all, someone that beautiful who didn't date? Not very likely.
If only he knew. She smiled up at him and nodded her head. "That sounds great." Despite how nervous she had been, she felt better now that she was in his presence. At least this way she knew that he wasn't going to stand her up. Now, just to make sure that he didn't run away from the date screaming, or anything like that. "You know, for someone who works in a restaurant, I don't eat out much, so Yamashita-san will have to choose." The truth was, Maki never really felt comfortable going places with lots of people, especially on her own. Plus models had to watch their figure, so it was usually best for her to cook for herself anyway. "Um...and...it's been a while since I went to the movies too, so I'm not sure what's playing either." Oh god. Maki just realized that she must sound like a total recluse. She cringed inside as she realized she was blowing this date, and badly.
"Don't worry, I don't get out much either." Tomohisa gave her a smile, extending his arm for her to take. "I'm usually stuck home grading papers or making lesson plans, so I don't get out too much." That, and it was usually safer. People tended to get hurt when he got angry or excited. But he'd learned to keep his power under control, the little explosive demonstration in the classroom previously not withstanding.
Seeing him smile made her feel so much better, and she smiled back with great relief. She took the arm he offered her, enjoying the way her arm rested against his. It reminded her how little actual contact she'd had with another person outside of work. Something as simple as just walking arm in arm with someone was a big deal to her, but she tried not to let it show too much. He'd probably think she was really weird, or something. "So, how were your students today?" He'd regaled her with some stories about his class when they'd see each other in the restaurant, and part of Maki was wondering if she'd ever meet these students of his one day.
"They're good kids, for the most part. They like to make fun of my Korean pronunciation," Tomohisa laughed, thinking of his first day. "There's one that loves to make mischief, but he's a good kid at heart. Today went rather well. My first try at an experiment with them didn't go very well, and they were a bit wary. But they're warming up to me, little by little."
"That's great! Teaching is such a noble profession. I really admire those who do it. It's a lot more meaningful than what I do, that's for sure." Part of her wondered if maybe she should just give up on this modeling thing and go home to Japan and find some more respectable work. But her parents encouraged to at least take a fair shot at it, and in the end Maki knew she'd regret it if she didn't at least give it her best. "And your Korean isn't that bad! They shouldn't make fun!" She laughed quietly. "Though, I suppose that doesn't mean much coming from someone like me who can only just get by."
The pair came to a stop in front of an ornately decorated door. Maki looked up to read the restaurant name. "Oh! Thai food! How did Yamashita-san know I love Thai food?"
"Really?! You must be a mind reader! Its my favorite too!" Tomohisa grinned at her, before opening the door and escorting her inside.
Maki laughed a little nervously; having powers of her own, it suddenly dawned on her that she might not be the only one out there with special abilities. "Yamashita-san is such a joker! Besides, wouldn't that make you the mind reader?" She loooked around the restaurant, admiring the decor; it wasn't a restaurant that she had been to before. "This place is really lovely."
