Fern (Maidenhair)

“Doctor Kim, this is the file of the newest case.  Can you look over it for a second?  I have to assign it soon,” a nurse came into the small office carrying a transparent folder with documents inside.

“I will, thank you,” Jaejoong stood up and took the folder from her, quickly flipping it open.  “Ah, a child with dengue fever… call for Dr. Jung and Dr. Lee.”

“Right away, Sir,” the nurse bowed, and took the folder from him before she quickly exited.  No one really wanted to stay there for long because of the awful smell.

Aside from being an office, the room was also used to experiment with artificial hearts, so it was filled with the smell of blood and raw muscle.

“Sir,” a young man in an intern uniform came in.  “Someone wished to see you.”

“Let them in,” Jaejoong nodded absently as he stared at the contracting muscles of the heart, and winced slightly when the contraction became irregular.  “Oh, and call for Dr. Cho, please.”

“Yessir,” the intern nodded and walked out.

Jaejoong sighed as he turned off the blood pump, and took out the heart from the machine, and placed it on a metal dish.  “Another failure… I wonder if I did something wrong with this one.  The last one worked just fine.”

“Jaejoong.”

“Appa,” Jaejoong said in surprise as he whirled to look at his father, and nearly knocked into the tray.  “What brought you here?” he asked.

“I just wanted to check on you,” Mr. Kim said simply.  “After all, he is here too.”

“Aish, Appa, why are you so worried about him?” Jaejoong frowned.  “We’re not even in the same department.  He can never be ahead of me.”

“Did I tell you to talk back?”

Jaejoong almost froze.  “No, Sir,” he shook his head slowly, and bowed at him.  “I’m sorry.”

“Good,” Mr. Kim said as he looked around the office, and saw the heart on the dish.  “I see you’ve been doing an okay job.”

“Yeah…”

“Improve yourself, and don’t let anyone surpass you.”

“Yessir.”

A knock resounded on the door, and two men in white coats walked into the office.

“Ja-Dr. Kim, I heard you’re assigning me and Donghae to the newest patient,” Yunho said as he stared at Jaejoong’s father, then back at Jaejoong.  “I have another patient to take care of right now, so it’ll be better if you assign another doctor to work with him.”

“Ah,” Jaejoong sighed.  “Donghae-shii, call for Hyukjae-shii then.”

“Right away,” Donghae nodded, and walked out of the office.

“Jung Yunho,” Mr. Kim stared at him coldly.  “I’m not going to let you order my son around.”

“Oh?  And when did I?” Yunho stared back at him.

“Appa-“

“Jaejoong,” Kyuhyun came into the office.  “You called-eh… did I interrupt something?” he asked when he saw the two men glaring at each other.

“No, no, you didn’t,” Jaejoong shook his head, and sighed in relief for the distraction.  “Appa, Dr. Jung, please, I have work to do.  Someone needs it quick.”

The two glared at each other again, and walked out of the office, not talking, even one word.

“Whoa,” Kyuhyun shook his head. “That was your father?  No wonder you’re afraid of him.”

“Let’s not gossip my father, okay?” Jaejoong sighed tiredly.  “I can’t handle thinking of him.”

“Ah, I see.  I’m sorry,” Kyuhyun nodded.  “Well, let’s get started then.”

-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.

Jaejoong walked into the small garden at the back of the hospital, and sat down, opening his lunch box.  He had never liked the food from the cafeteria, so he always made the time to prepare his own lunch after he made breakfast since his mother would not cook.

“Whoa, you planted all this by yourself?  That’s awesome!”

“Ah, really?  I didn’t actually plant this all by myself though…”

“Oh, I know, I know, you planted it with Dr. Jung right?”

“Ah…”

“You two are so cute!  But don’t you think it’s not a secret anymore, since everyone in this place knows?”

“We’re not keeping this from you guys… rather, from our own families.”

“Oh… I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.  Thank you though.”

“Is this seat free?”

Jaejoong covered his mouth with his hand and laughed silently.  “There’s no seat here, Yunho-yah.”

“Then let it be my imaginary seat.  Is it free?”

“It always is,” Jaejoong smiled a little, and scooted over to let Yunho sit on the same rock he was sitting on.  They had placed it there a long time ago to sit on.

“I’m surprised they’ve grown this big,” Yunho commented, opening his own lunch box.  “It’s like… it’s only yesterday that we planted this.”

“It’s been almost three years,” Jaejoong corrected.  “Time sure flies.”

“Yeah,” Yunho agreed.

A long time ago, when they had just started dating each other, they reserved the small spot in the garden, and planted maidenhair fern there.

Since then, everyone who worked in the hospital came to know their relationship, but agreed not to tell anyone outside of the place because they knew how their families were.

“Jae…”

“Hm?”

“You’re so strong,” Yunho commented.  “I don’t think I can stand living with a man like him.”

“Oh…” Jaejoong looked down at the ground.

“I didn’t mean to talk bad about him-“

“I know,” Jaejoong smiled at him.  “You’ll learn to if you’ve lived with him for a long time.”

“Maybe,” Yunho nodded.  “But I don’t want to.”

Jaejoong laughed, and leaned his head on Yunho’s shoulder.  “You can say that because you’re not his son.”

“Maybe that is true,” Yunho mulled.  “Are you tired of keeping this a secret?”

Jaejoong looked at Yunho strangely.  “What, you’re going to break up with me?”

“No!  Of course not!” Yunho protested.  “The only thing that made me happy in my life is dating you.  How can I?”

Jaejoong placed his lunch box down, and hugged Yunho.  “Same goes for me,” he mumbled.  “So even if you’re letting me go, I’m not going to.”

“Jae,” Yunho said, and pushed Jaejoong back a little.  “Here,” he said, taking out a long chain with a ring dangling on it.  “I want you to wear it around your neck until the time when you can put it on your finger comes.”

Jaejoong leaned forward to let Yunho clasp the necklace.  He looked at the ring attached to it, and beamed.  “Thank you, Yunho-yah.”

“You’re welcome,” Yunho kissed him softly.  “Even when we’re apart, as long as you have it with you, I will always find you, no matter where you are.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”
