Chapter Fifteen - Stories of the Past

“Jaejoong?” Yunho knocked on the door to Jaejoong’s room.  “Jaejoong, it’s me Yunho, can I come in?”

After lunch, Jaejoong had washed the dishes quickly, and retreated to his bedroom without saying anything to anyone, and it made Junsu worry.  He asked Yunho to check on him as he was supposed to go around the island with Yoochun and Changmin in search of Yuhan, hoping he was only stranded somewhere and not really carried away by the tides.

No answer came.  Yunho sighed, and announced “I’m coming in” before he opened the door, and walked inside as slowly and silently as he could, so as to not alarm the other man.

He closed the door behind him, and saw Jaejoong sitting outside on the porch, on a lounge chair.  He smiled slightly, and approached him.

“Hey,” he said slowly.  He could see Jaejoong jump slightly at that, but soon relaxed as he recognized the familiar voice.  “May I join you?”

“Of course,” Jaejoong motioned at the other chair.

Yunho pulled the chair closer to the one Jaejoong was sitting on, and sat on it.  “Why are you here alone?” he asked.  “Don’t you want to go with the others?”

“Nah…” Jaejoong shook his head.  “I believe in him.  He’ll find me if he’s…”

“Oh,” Yunho mumbled.  “That’s… good.”

“What is?”

“To trust someone like that,” Yunho shrugged.  “I’ve never really had someone I trusted, ever since my father died.”

“That was his case as well,” Jaejoong mumbled, staring out at the sea.  “His father died while on an expedition.  He was a sailor.”

“So… he became an investigator instead?”

“Yeah… more or less,” Jaejoong confirmed.  “We met each other during the funeral.  I’ve been on the same boat with his father once so I came.  At that time, he didn’t trust anyone, because it was said that his father died because one of his friends tampered with the boat.”

“That’s…” Yunho frowned.

“I know,” Jaejoong smiled a little.  “Well, we started knowing each other since then.  He learned to trust me, and those around me that I trust.”

“And… yeah, you know what happened next,” Jaejoong shrugged.  “Too bad we had to come here.”

“I’m sorry,” Yunho patted Jaejoong’s head, and pulled him close.  “I’m sorry I couldn’t find him.”

“No, it’s not your fault.”

“But I know you’re afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing him.”

Jaejoong looked at Yunho strangely, and frowned.  “How did you-“

“I was there,” Yunho answered simply.  “The day you came into the hospital with him after he was shot.  I was there.  I saw you and him.”

“You-you were there?” Jaejoong blinked disbelievingly.

“Yes, I was there,” Yunho nodded, resting his head on Jaejoong’s.  “I saw you panicking, begging for the doctors to save him.  I saw it all.”

“And since then, I swore I’d always keep an eye on you.  Because I don’t want to see you like that ever again.”

“Is that…” Jaejoong paused.  “Is that why… you’re always there?”

Yunho smiled, and kissed the top of his head.  “What do you think?” he asked softly.  “But it seems like I’ve failed.”

“No, Yunho, it didn’t have anything to do with you,” Jaejoong said firmly.  “You didn’t have to do it, even.  I mean, I can take care of myself and-“

“But I want to,” Yunho cut him off.  “Won’t you let me?”

“I-“ Jaejoong was speechless.  “But-but why would you want to?  I was nobody to you at that time…”

“Let’s just call it gut feeling,” Yunho grinned slightly at him.  “I always trust it.”

“Oh,” Jaejoong mumbled, and sat silently, letting Yunho wrap his arms around him.

“Did you regret coming here?” Yunho asked.  “I don’t.  Even if I die later, I still won’t regret it.”

“I don’t know,” Jaejoong sighed.  “Why wouldn’t you?”

“Because,” Yunho took a deep breath.  “Now you acknowledge me.”

“You are too kind,” Jaejoong said, burying his face in Yunho’s shirt.  He mumbled something, but Yunho couldn’t quite hear what he said.

“What is it?” Yunho asked, pulling Jaejoong back so he could look at him.  “Why are you crying?” he asked again, his tone a little sad when he saw Jaejoong’s face soaked with tears.

“Why are you all so kind?” he sobbed, looking down at his feet as he wiped his tears away.  “What did I ever do to deserve such treatment?”

“You never did anything wrong,” Yunho said.  “And… I guess, you’re just lovable.”

Jaejoong chuckled slightly, wiping his tears with his sleeves.  “Mush,” he mumbled as he hit Yunho’s arm playfully.  “But… those guys… they hate me…”

“No they don’t,” Yunho shook his head.  “They just needed someone to blame for their own misfortune, and the most convenient one is you.”

“I hope so,” Jaejoong nodded.

“It must be so,” Yunho said.

“Yeah…” Jaejoong mumbled.  “Thank you, Yunho.”

“You’re welcome,” Yunho said, squeezing Jaejoong’s shoulder.  “Consider me returning a favor after what you’ve done for me during that night.”

“Erh?  That night? Which night?”

Yunho laughed, and pinched his nose.  “You know, this is exactly why we all like you so much.  You’re too kind yourself.”

Jaejoong rubbed his nose, and mock glared at Yunho.  “No, really, which night?”

“That stormy night,” Yunho shrugged.  “Now, excuse me.  I’m joining them in search of him.”

“Ah, yes,” Jaejoong nodded.  “Yunho… please find him.”

Yunho paused.  “I can’t promise you I will,” he shook his head.  “But… we’ll see…”

Jaejoong watched Yunho walk away, and frowned.  What did he mean by that?  Was he hiding something?
