'Phat Girlz', Ekimenimess, & Oppression...

Blessings all.

Friday night was seeing 'Phat Girlz' with ninthraven, fritterfae, and marys-daughter. The cinematography reminded me of a documentary, sometimes. And, I'm sure some moments flew over my head. But, it was a film of fat acceptance- one of a few. It was about large women, rejected in America, finding love and acceptance in another culture. It's pretty bad in America if you have to flee it for love. In the US- Remember fat is the only allowable discrimination! Being big, I know those snide comments and ads, clothes that should have me in a monastery (locked away from view), the disgusted looks because I dared to eat in public, most of my 'friends' pontifications for my 'health', among others. GET OFF!!! I'm tired of carrying thin peoples' self esteem and worth issues! I have mine own, there ain't no room for yours. If you had some meat on your bones, you could carry your own emotional baggage.

The message is a good one. Go see it.

Saturday, I was off to Baltimore. chumleyfrog was attending Ecumenicon. I went up to visit her. She introduced me to the two people she was travelling with. I didn't attend the conference, but I wandered the dealers' corridor, saw a couple people I knew, and visited for an extended time with chumleyfrog. It was a nice visit, and I had a lovely day. So lovely, I didn't want it to end...

When I got back into DC, I took myself to Dupont Circle. Had me a sandwich, and just enjoyed the evening. It was enough to be out and about, with other human beings.

I went to the Renwick Gallery on Sunday. I called up the Smithsonian website and the Renwick was showing some craft stuff, along with Grant Wood's American Gothic. I went for the crafts, but ended up really participating in the Grant Wood exhibit. American Gothic is ok. But his other works, art, and his home rally spoke to me. Plus, he did his work in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I really enjoyed my trip.

A realization: There is alot about Iowa that calls to me. My family took trips and vacations there. I love the Amana Colonies, tho, I have not been there in more than a decade. Iowa City was home to the Radical Faggots (whom I never met), a group of Queer activists who lived their principles and started RFD magazine. It is also home to the first place I had organic pizza and dessert pizza. I attended a wedding, in January, of a friend, in Des Moines. In their botanical gardens. If you remember the film, Silent Running, you have seen the dome over Des Moines' botanical gardens. The wedding was lit by the spotlights shining up from the bases of the trees, the wedding party was on the garden floor, while the guests were on the mezzanine balcony, and the blizzard snow shushed down the glass dome. Amazing! Love Iowa. Miss Iowa.

As I was leaving the Renwick, I got caught in a George W. moment. He was leaving the White House, so they cleared Pennsylvania Avenue, between 15th and 17th (this is, already, a pedestrian only area for security purposes). This means you cannot leave the Renwick through the front door on Pennsylvania. You must leave through the basement (not the most pretty) door on 17th. I got hassled by the police because I left the area, walking north and away from the route, and didn't join the tourists at the corner fawning over the excitement of seeing the asshole, dictator, idiot, president, office-thief's motorcade. They had already closed off Pennsylvania headed west. They wanted to see my I.D., which I provided, wanted to know what I was doing and my schedule for it (they were not 'enthused' by my answer of wandering), and asked to inspect my backpack (which I agreed to, because I didn't have anything forbidden, like nail clippers in it). Ah! The sweet rotting smell of freedom in the USA.

I walked north on 17th to Connecticut Avenue to Dupont Circle. I got an ice cream cone at Larry's. He remembered me and what I usually choose (white chocolate with chocolate chips). My fantasy life rejuvenated, I wandered home. Read some, talked to friends on the phone, had some supper and popcorn, and watched 'Scooby Doo' with ninthraven and the appalled and commenting zagone. I like most of the movies I watch because they take me out of reality. Reality has it's place, but that place is not everywhere. zagone and I started watching 'Constantine', but, I had to go to bed.

Tonight is curry night. I'm gonna work on my prayer list/outline/schedule some more. Finish my book on the elections of the Popes in 1978 (Thanks old_swordsman). Figure out what to read next. Write a couple of letters. May make bread.

The God/dess/s bless each of us with happiness and laughter.
