WTSO.net, short for Watch The Simpsons Online, got shut down today.
This is the message I received when I logged on for my daily dose of yellow people (not the squinty-eyed kind, either):
"This notice is on behalf of TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX FILM CORPORATION and its affiliated companies (collectively, "FOX") are the exclusive owners of copyrights in motion pictures.
"Watch The Simpsons Online" (
http://wtso.net/) has been permently shutdown from the date April 16, 2009 due to unauthorized copying and distribution constituting copyright infringement under Section 106 of the U.S. Copyright Act.
This server is under current investigation, all electronic records have been taken including but not limited to the actual file(s) and the I.P. addresses, server logs, user registration data and all other files, records, documents or information constituting or evidencing users that have uploaded, downloaded, or streamed content through or from this site. Any or all of this information may be used for prosecution in court."
So I'm panicking for two reasons.
One reason is because The Simpsons is an addiction of mine, and I mean that in the literal sense. It's something that I watch everyday, and if I can't watch it, I get cranky. Ask anyone.
The second reason is because of the last paragraph in the notice, and particularly this sentence: "Any or all of this information may be used for prosecution in court". Are they able to prosecute me for having watched these episodes via said party? Or since I never uploaded/downloaded any of the material (except for maybe one download, ever), am I clear? It also seems like they'd want to prosecute the owners/administrators of the site, if anyone.
