elipie's "Spirits" is a brilliant Gotham vid.

Gotham is a Batman prequel, set when Bruce Wayne is still a young, traumatized teenager who has not yet decided to become Batman. "Spirits" positions Bruce within Gotham-the-show's batshit version of Gotham-the-city, setting him against the people who will become his Rogue's Gallery, the lunatic criminals who terrorize the city in costume and force him, ultimately, to put on a costume to fight them.

Many of the more meta Batman stories always wonder about the causality of that relationsihp- is there a Rogue's Gallery of costumed supervillains, requiring Batman to fight them, or does the existence of Batman engender some sort of psychological desire in criminals to become costumed supervillains?

"Spirits" turns the focus back onto Bruce and the personal demons he is fighting. It does this even though he barely appears in the vid, the clip placement in this vid is a master class in how to establish perspective economically to make your argument. The Bruce Wayne of "Spirits" is on a path that could put him in the same place as Catwoman, or the Ridder or the Joker or the Penguin, and only by defeating the nightmares of his own history can he steer himself onto a different path.
